My personal history with Hot Wheels

Hot Wheels. These were a much more recent fascination of my dad's in 2011-2016 or so he decided to get into collecting - at first it was Hot Wheels brand cars. And at first I thought it was a cool hobby for him. But being as he did things either all or nothing, Hot Wheels were the same and quickly became an unhealthy hobby. And it branched from Hot Wheels (.99 cents a piece) to Johnny Rockets (3.00 a piece) , M2's (6.00 a piece), and the larger die casts cars (anywhere from 12.00 and up).
He was into hotwheels when one of the more recent "Batman" movies came out and I remember he bought many sets of the "Batman" collectible cars. These were expensive because it had a semi loaded up with cars that all had something to do with Batman. Now I'm not picking about either "Batman" or die cast collectors, but dad didn't like "Batman" to begin with so I could never figure out why he would want a zillion of the same expensive "Batman" car sets.
I also remember bailing him out several times. He insisted that my mom not renew their home owner's insurance - because it was more money that he could spend on hot wheels. Then he started in on car gas. I remember times when he would run the car on fumes, putting only $5 or so per time in so that he had more to spend for hot wheels. Then he started in on the grocery budget. Of course his temper was so scary that my mom just went along with everything. So I stepped in and made sure that they had food money. I watched as my friends as they went on trips, and bought fun things. In the meantime my dad would yell at me for suggesting that he cut down on his hobby. "It's my only hobby" he would wail. or "I don't even smoke". I told him I was happy he had a hobby, but that he needed to be responsible and pay his bills first. "I don't even like this one" he declared, holding up a hot wheel. "I just want a lot of something!" - and sure enough, he does have a lot of somethings. 70+ of the same car in hot wheels of certain ones. The 2 car garage at my parent's place is mostly full of tote boxes of Hot Wheels. There is only 1 car in there, rest of the space is mostly Hot Wheels.
Not to mention the office room. I have been working in there and it feels great to de-clutter. Shelves upon shelves, plus other little toy cars, in their packages , stapled and pinned to the wall. It looked as crazy as it sounds. He had toy cars, in front of other toy cars, in front of stacks of toy cars in front of the actual office supplies.
It feels healing to pack those up. I don't know how many he has. thousands.

That's kind of funny he bought the Batman cars and didn't even like them. His hobby got out of control and how sad how you guys were treated.
My children's father was like that with video games. He had to buy every new one that came out and he didn't even hate time to play them. They would sit in the wrapper. The games were about $50 each. It was insane how much money he spent on them. He did make sure the bills were paid but every drop of money after that went towards video games.

@FayeHazel oh boy the romantic stuff from his past might have been awkward for your mom.

So strange to me. In his later years he would also get into wearing tshirts with super heros on them. Still, he wasn't into them... I'm not sure what he was thinking.
Wow, that is crazy about the games. Where would it stop? He could always start with other platforms and older games too. Anyway... how frustrating

@shaggin That could be - toward the end dad would talk relentlessly about his teen years. Including some rather sordid details of his romantic life.... no sense of what is appropriate anymore.
I'm sorry for your loss. Pity that his dad sold it all for so little, but sometimes people deal with things in that way.

@FayeHazel I’m sure many are collector’s items.
Of course, I bought most rewards at the supermarket or Dollar store.. I usually gave out 5 rewards a week for different things.

Yeah, he has an almost scary amount of these.
That is a great idea for class reward.

@DianneN I'm surprised to see that there actually is a market for some of those hot wheels he has.
That was a good idea, did you see better behaviors on account of the rewards?

Omg. Thats so many. And the batman part really confuses me too if he didn't care for batman. But then, a collection to a hoarder is like heaven im sure.

It's truly amazing how many he managed to amass. I wasn't even counting the tote boxes of hot wheels he kept in the garage.
He'd be happy , at first for a few hours after buying a stash of them. Then for hour or so. Then, the longer he'd been doing this, he'd be back to being in a bad mood before he got back to the car from shopping.

I collected them as a kid, but it never went beyond that. My mother used to beat the hell out of me with the tracks, so there was that.

Wow. :/ That seems like she had some severe anger issues there. I'm sorry you went through that.
If a person collects them responsibly (pays bills first, has room in which to store them, etc) I have nothing against them. Brilliant marketing , and actually they're really well made
He would get the remote control car too... and I think that upset me particularly. I had an RC car as a kid. I was playing with it one day (drove it down the hallway where he was standing) and he exploded into a rage and threw it away for me. So, subconsciously I was probably thinking something like "mine got thrown away".
At least he never hit me with them. Sheesh. That's terrible.

@teamfreak16 My own childhood was rather.... unorthodox.... not many beatings, just a few. …. but some very weird values were instilled.
I'm sorry you went through that. I will never know why certain people feel like treating children like that is appropriate

Hopefully you can sell them to a collector and make a tidy sum to spend on something less frivolous. Or maybe do? After all the bills are paid of course.

Ah, I would be so pleased to do that. After a little nosing around it does seem like there is some market for them, after all. Ah yes. That's how I was brought up. Always may your bills with any windfall money, and then enjoy the rest....

I could not read to the end Faye after how your father has been. I am so glad he is in a nursing home and cannot cause you or your mother more trouble.
