Woke up Freezing! No Heat

United States
January 31, 2020 7:13am CST
Yesterday I brought to the attention of my family, a problem involving the heating. I heard a very shrill noise coming from the heating. By the time my family came to investigate, the noise was gone. This morning, whilst I still slept, they heard the same noise again. This time they decided to turn off the heat while they were out of the house. I was bundled up in my bed mostly unaware. We've now called the HVAC people and hope that they'll call us back soon. We also hope it won't cost us an arm and a leg. How's your morning / afternoon / evening / night?

@CarolDM Certainly will. We have plenty of blankets here to do just that. I guess it's perfect weather to wear a onesie as well.

@LadyDuck Yes it is. We have been colder than usual as well. It's been in the 30 degree range at night (That's about -1 in celsius), and in the day, it has gotten no hotter than 40 or 50 degrees. Today we also expect rain. It's now 11:16, I am personally hoping they'll come shortly after noon.

@ScribbledAdNauseum I hope it gets fixed. Not a good idea for you to be cold in the winter.

Yes, I agree. We have heat but the pipe within the furnace room is far too hot. The family turned the heat off before they left, and have since turned it back on. We have called and there will be someone out to tell us what is going on soon.

@Hannihar I hope not. We think we know what is wrong with it, but even a small part can cost a lot of money.

They are supposed to be here between noon and 2 pm. Here in my State the weather changes often. A few weeks ago we had warm temperatures and yet it's winter.

@ScribbledAdNauseum Temperature here took a dip this winter .In mid December we had 5 C in our town.To me it was unprecedented. Never before in my life I had experienced such a shivering cold. And then mercury began moving northwards and now it is getting hot and hotter everyday.

@Shivram59 I do not think I could survive in a hot environment. I start feeling suffocated when I get too hot.

I hope it is just a little problem and it won't cost so much. I can understand it is hard to suffer for the cold weather.

@ScribbledAdNauseum That's quite much. Perhaps buying the new equipment won't be higher a lot?
• United States
2 Feb 20
@youless That is the price of the new equipment plus the cost to install the new equipment. We will have paid $1,200 once all is said and done. We paid $105 on friday just for the worker to come and look at what was wrong.

I hope it gets fixed. Unless it is bitterly cold I don't have the heat on in here. I use a space heater and my fake woodstove which throws a lot of heat. It's in the bedroom and keeps me cozy. In fact if it is on full blast it gets too warm in there.

@ScribbledAdNauseum Yikes! They told me my heat pump if it breaks it will have to probably be replaced..They can add freon and so forth..but they aren't making parts for it anymore,,and it isn't even old. No more than 16 years anyway.

We are able to use the heat, but they will need to replace a component within the fan from what I understand. It will cost quite a bit of money, over $1000.

@snowy22315 Yes, that's a hefty fee. Our entire system is about forty years old. Parts have been replaced over the years, but I think the original shell of it is as old as the house, so really about forty five years old. Wow, I wonder why they stopped making parts for it? I also thought that most HVAC parts came with a 20 year warranty. We had something else we had to replace a few years and he said something like that.

@ScribbledAdNauseum Maybe it is just a clogged filter I hope.
• United States

@RebeccasFarm It could be that. Our filter is an old one that you just vacuum. I've told the menfolk that we should replace it. Do they listen? No.

OH lord and it is typical it is playing up in the winter months. Never does in the summer when you use it less! Hope you manage to get it sorted soon!
• United States
31 Jan 20
Oh, but it actually did act up in the summer. That is, the air conditioning did. It's usually the heat every winter. We began to count ourselves lucky that it was not acting up. It seems we were hopeful too soon.

@garymarsh6 I have heard that the UK doesn't really use aircon. I guess the temperatures are usually decent enough to open a window to allow air flow? We usually open windows in the spring.

@ScribbledAdNauseum OH right it does the heat and the aircon. How clever. In the UK we do not use aircon that much in the home. Probably only about 2% have aircon if that!

Thank you. We are able to use the heater without fear now, but there is a part we require that will cost over $1000. When all is said and done, we will have paid about $1200 to the company doing the repairs.
