What effect does winter have on you?

Winter mountain
February 10, 2020 8:04am CST
The sun has turned again and the days are gradually getting longer once more. About time, because just as everything is slightly different at night compared to the day, life also alters in winter compared to summer. I love winter for it`s cozy fires and warm jumpers, it`s quiet snowfall and hearty food. But as Christmas time is past and we are getting increasingly Vitamin-D deprived, it can quickly turn towards a sense of depression that can be hard to shake. Do you ever wake up in the middle of the night with a worry that seems to fill the room? Yet when the morning comes, sense returns and your mind is able to apply perspective again.. The last few days, the mountains surrounding us have been dark and grey, making them even bigger than they already are.. I am clinging on to the knowledge that the sun is still out there and will return soon, as well as my common sense! If you have any tips regarding winter depression, please share!

I live in a tropical country so i really can't say much about the winter season but if you asked me about cold weather, we do have monsoon seasons here and rainy days are starting on where i live. It's not a good thing most especially doing public transport as well as it's also a scare for those who live near flood prone places good thing i do live uptown. Keep yourself warm! Thanks for your post!

@Onthemountain Hey, thanks for your reply! yes flora and fauna are an abundance here in the tropics. the only thing that hindrance that is drought if there's El Nino season. Thanks for your concern! Thank God that the weather right now is great! The rain had stopped and is in tune for the Valentine's day. Hope you have a great day!

@StyleWithSense It sounds like you get to deal with both extremes, very wet seasons and very dry seasons! Good to hear the weather is great :-) Have a wonderful Valentines!

Thanks JR T.! I can't imagine what a tropical climate would be like. Fauna and Flora must be through the roof, I'd love to see that one day. I can understand the stress people will experience in flood prone areas.. at the foot of the mountain here we have an increasing risk of landslides due to the frequent freezing and thawing of the snow. People are very worried about their farms! Hope you will get through the monsoon season alright, keep yourself dry! :)

Hello and welcome to myLot. I like winter too, I like to stay inside, to read my book near the fireplace, I never feel depressed in winter. Even if it is cold we have many sunny days during winter. I always have a walk when the sun shines, this help with Vitamin-D.

@Onthemountain We live among hills, but we are on top of a hill, we get morning sun, that is so nice in winter. Do you live in a Scandinavian country? The sun is a problem during a few months there. The Vitamin-D supplement are not the best for sure, but necessary if you have no sun.

@LadyDuck sounds great, morning sun is priceless! Yes, we are in west-Norway, with only a few hours of darkness in the summer and only a few hours of light in the winter. I have found that it ironically can be lighter during a winter month with a lot of snow, than during a summer month with a lot of rain though :-)

Thanks Anna! You can`t beat a book by the fireplace, true :-) Do you live among hills or flat land to catch so many sunny days? We lose the sun for about two months, but I`m contemplating investing in some snow shoes to be able to walk up to where the sun reaches. It must be so much more effective than vitamin-D supplements!

I prefer winters over summers so the upcoming heat is definitely troubling me

Interesting! So you have to shelter for the heat instead of the cold.. How hot do the summers get where you are?

I love winter. I know there are many who hate it. But there is nothing like winter. I do have very dry skin during winter but I will give up any sunny days for a good winter time. I hate summers and so does my body.

Nice to hear :) I would not be able to go as far as love or hate but I certainly agree there is nothing like it! Do you try to stay out of the sun in summers? Or is it the heat?

Not really, since I've never really had one. And now the day is 4 hours and 37 minutes longer than for winter solstice, so it won't come this year either. Never tried living up in the valleys though. Much more open here down by the fjord. Right now I'm having a "this is not winter!"-tantrum, but that's something else. It's supposed to be -5 and snow, not rain and mud and every now and then some sleeth. I want snow! Proper winter, not this sad excuse of a season. Have you tried cod-liver oil and one of those wake-up-lamps that have nearly the same light as the sun? Makes it easier to get up in the morning. And in Western Norway it should be quite light now, I'm assuming you're south of me (Trondheim). Staying outside when it's light helps a lot. With a normal 8-16 job you'll still have some weeks to go there.

I used to hate it before I began volunteering at my kids school and yard duty. I was amazed at how nice it actually can be. I know that I would never have ventured out for any other reason. Now I try to get out each day. It all depends on just how cold it is lol!

Oh I like that! For some of us it is just really important to get outside and interact! What kind of volunteering do you do at the school?

Hi! Welcome to Mylot. Enjoy yourself here and interact with us. Winter deprives me of my Vitamin D, too and my skin is getting dry and itchy. I prefer to have the summer season.

@Onthemountain No, we didn´t have snow this winter.

Thanks Thelma :-) I definitely recognize the dry and itchy skin, no amount of skincream seems to make up for it! Do you get any snow where you are in Germany?

It can be really tough when thoughts keep floating around. I used to listen to music to try and fall asleep, but apparently that can keep us in a very shallow sleep from which we don't rest very well! What do you do to try and help out a restless mind?

It doesn't get very cold over here and there is sun most days during the winter. I think we have completely different climate between our countries. When the days are dark we need to be patient and strong and the sun will rise again.
