Sandstorm today

It looks like winter is over in my place and we had the first sandstorm this morning. It is very windy and the desert sand is spreading in the atmosphere. Even though I am new to this country, I have started to recognize the signs of the weather changing. The picture is mine, taken this morning and showing the dusty roads and atmosphere. We need to wear a mask to avoid breathing in the dust when we are outdoors. Some people don't wear masks, I don't know how they can breathe.

I don't see any picture either. Perhaps you need to resize the picture to a smaller scale so that it can be easily uploaded to mylot.

It was too big for uploading, now it's finally up! It's very dusty and it's hard to breath so we try to stay indoors.

I've only seen sandstorm in movies. We don't have a desert nearby. It must be dusty where you live.

@besweet That looks like the time when we had the haze problem caused by forest burning in Indonesia. The visibility was very low.

@UmiNoor Nature sometimes is very unpredictable. The visibility is low in some locations that are exposed to the desert yes, my work is outside of the city so it can get really bad with a strong sandstorm.

It's very far from your place, I think you are safe! I am in Middle East now, they have sandstorms sometimes from the desert when it's very windy. But we still have to go to work and continue our daily responsibilities. I wish we could stay home!

@LadyDuck Oh sorry to hear that. I though it wouldn't cover so much distance but the winds are very strong.

@besweet No we are not safe, the wind is blowing and I am noticing red sand on my outside windows sill. It happens several times a year, it joins us.

That doesn't look healthy to be out in that. I hope you have a mask if you need to go out.

We are wearing masks yes, and inside the car it's ok as long as we don't go outside. It's painful for the eyes also.

It happens a few times per year, we try to stay indoors and avoid breathing the dust. But everything continues normally here, there are no disruptions because of the sandstorm.

@Janet357 I am in middle east now, I just keep my home country in my profile. Sometimes it happens in Greece also. The dust comes from Africa, but it happens very rarely.

I didn't know they got sandstorms in Greece either. What sort of terrain produces the sand?

I am not in Greece at the moment, this photo is from middle east. I have to update and put a comment in my profile because I don't want to change my country and it confuses everyone! In Greece we had a few dusty days per year, from African dust. But it's not as bad as here.

I remember going to school in sand storms like that and often when I was walking home that sand would whip the back of my legs and it would sting.

Ouch, it sounds painful. I have experienced that at the sandy beach, on some very windy days and I know the feeling. We avoid going out with the sandstorm because it's not healthy to breathe the dust.

There is no other option, it's normal for this area because of the desert. Everyone goes to work and continues with the daily tasks. If it gets too bad maybe some meetings will be cancelled but that's about it.

It's the Arabian desert, every time it gets very windy there is sandstorm. It doesn't happen that often, maybe a few times per year.

Sometimes but not so often, only when it's very windy. The only problem is that it will take a long time for the dust to settle down completely. It will be dusty for a few days.
