I am surprised at the hand sanitizer being out of stock lately.

If I wanted hand sanitizer, I would have a hard time finding it in some stores. Due to the panic from COVID-19 outbreak on the planet, people are stocking up on a lot of food and water and other supplies and one such item is hand sanitizer, which contains 60% alcohol or more. So I noticed that while people are in panic mode most everywhere, buying everything from Lysol spray and bottled water by the case loads, the one thing that really does not cost anything is to take 20 seconds, at least, every time you wash your hands and wash them regularly. Cover your cough. Dispose of tissue after sneezing into a waste basket. Don't hand shake someone who just coughed into their hand and so on. I am keeping a month supply of food, water and medicine, just in case but mainly I am doing what I can to just stay in and not get out all that much. Not going on a cruise ship nor going to a gambling casino. Not going to a party or a concert but will occasionally to to a local library to get something to watch on DVD or BluRay and some books so if sometime in the near future, we are all told to remain at home and self quarantine, I will have enough to keep me occupied while sheltering in place. Today is one day more, we didn't have the day before.

It is absolutely amazing that people are going into panic mode even if there is nobody within 100 miles of them who has tested positive for Covid-19. You can bet your bottom dollar that there plenty of people much closer than that who can infect you with other varieties of flu, some of which have much more severe effects.

Actually, I am keeping my distance from my older brother and his friends. The last time the friends came by we both got sick with flu. And yesterday my older brother told me on the phone, that he had a cold. Well, yea, flu season was bad this year and people still don't always cover their cought. Stupid people abound.

@lookatdesktop I gather that Covid-19 does not give you a runny nose or sore throat, so if these are the symptoms your brother is demonstrating, it is only the usual ailment he is likely to give you!

@indexer , Most likely yes, just a common cold or flu. And for that matter, allergies are bad because of warmer temps here lately.

Use common sense and hunker down. That is what I am doing.

I think people are acting crazy and panicking instead of using common sense.

I agree. People go into panic mode and that only makes matters worse. I know my own anxiety has gotten worse, just because I run a Facebook Group called All About COVID-19 and after only 6 days of running that group, I have gathered loads of information and already have over 60 new members. The media either downplays the virus or over states it. The people on the cruise ships, for example, they want to go home and can't and if I were in their shoes, thank goodness I am not, I would be in a panic, just because I would not want to be there longer than I had to and waiting to either get exposed or be placed in quarantine. The fact is, people in general do not use common sense and they do not cover their cough, and they don't wash their hands after going out in public, shopping or eating at a restaurant. If the germs reach a major population, the key is to avoid the community spread. Stay away from sick people SAFSP! My main objective is to be forewarned and try to just maintain my regular daily activities as usual but be more aware and be more cautious about my own personal hygiene.

@simone10 , Worse than that, the people who are shut ins who do not have family, the elderly and sick who are way past middle age, might not have any of the things we take for granted and there should in fact be door to door checks by local officers of the peace, the basic law enforcement officers, who could go door to door to see if the people who are living, confined in their homes, with no relatives, could get the much needed care they need. Most people will, out of pure panic, just get sicker and possibly die in their homes from other illnesses, like a case of influenza A or B or have diabetes and so forth, may just lay down and die and that is no way for America to operate.

@lookatdesktop I totally agree. It's just so sad and disheartening to see how selfish and greedy the world is.

Bar soap will work also, as long as you rub your hands together for at least 20 seconds and work up a good lather. I prefer bar soap. Dial is one I use and also Lever2000. Finger tips that touch keyboards and then the mouth, the eyes and the nose, Those areas are absolutely vulnerable and we don't consciously realize how often we touch our face. It is more than we realize.

@Deepizzaguy , Stay well, and go get some regular gloves if you need I have leather ones as they can be washed pretty easy and used over and over. The kind of gloves most food workers are using are platex type gloves like people in the hospitals use, you know, those blue gloves? Anyway, You can make your own hand sanitizer but in a pinch, just use bar soap. It works just fine. It matters that you let the lather build up and keep your hands moving for at least 20 seconds, before rinsing the soap off, then you're good to go.

What's crazy is seeing people in public tossing their tissues on the ground for grounds maintenance to pick up and also, they cough in their hands without even thinking.

Yes lucky I managed to order them sometime back. It is now toilet paper which is what most people are hoarding now. As a hoarder, I have 80 rolls of toilet paper even before the virus. I hate not to have any around when I truly need them.

I buy a 20 pack when needed, Scotts 1000 sheets rolls. They seem to be the most economical.

I am glad we always have a big bottle of hand sanitize in the house. At Costco they were having a limit of four cases on the water. We already have two cases at home so we did not buy any.

Actually, I just don't get it. I have a kitchen faucet water filter. It has been used to filter the chlorine out of the water for purposes of making tea, coffee, soup and for drinking. I re-use plastic drinking water bottles and fill them as needed and then freeze them and let them be there on the coffee table in an insulator to thaw out and sip on throughout the day, but only buy a case of bottled drinking water for convenience. If the grid goes down having stored drinking water is a must but during such thing as a panic and a pandemic causing panic, you know that water is the least of my concern. It is that I am past 60 years of age and fall in the group of most likely to get very sick if exposed and the only way I can prevent exposure is to not go anywhere at all and if I go out, I maintain proper distance from others and just hope nobody sneezes in my face.

I never bought excess of anything. We only have enough for a month's supply. Its lock down so its home for us. Going out is only when very necessary.

Yeah here in the UK the news said today Supermarkets like Tesco's have now put a rationing system in place that means customers can only purchase so much of certain items and the top two listed on the news said hand sanitizer and UHT long life milk. I'm in luck because I drink non dairy mylk and we have a few cartons in the cupboard that are I suppose considered 'long life'. Also you know whats great about a lot of vegan ready to eat foods or easy prepare foods. They have MUCH LONGER dates on them often before they have to be eaten that's not always the case of course but because it's not dairy or egg filled or meat based quite often the alternatives do last longer. So it is quite nice in that aspect. Also even though veganism is on the rise it is not so much so on the rise that I'll have half as much trouble as the general meat eating population if we ever were to need to stock up on food items. Aside from generic items that are not specific to vegans but rather vegan friendly. Oh that reminds me they are also apparently limiting how much dry pasta one can buy. I think I'm fine on that front as my thrifty scrooge of a brother couldn't buy the normal size of own brand pasta he gets and refused to pay more than what he thought fair for a bag of pasta at the same size as the store branded one. So he comes home with what must be well I don't' know it was a giant bag of pasta like giant giant. So we'll be stocked up on that for awhile. Although he likes his pasta quite a lot and he always cooks it in batches that last him two days roughly makes up most of his meals for those two days. Which means it's already probably been used up a reasonable amount but still gotta have enough to last a month maybe. And I have packets of gluten free pasta too. Alongside cans of beans that I've hoarded and not used because I am dumb like that haha. Actually I could quite easily survive. What is going to be even better is next time something like this comes along we'll have had our greenhouse in place by then and up and going so all we'd have to do is stock up on seeds and bam we've got veggies fruits and legumes to last us all year round! All we'd need is bread pasta and such. Which is easy enough to stock up on! You are right though people could just wash their hands with soap I think it's because its viewed that hand sanitizer is better at killing germs than hand soap since its used in hospitals and the like. I suppose also because its easy to take the small bottles out and about with you so you can use it constantly if youre OTT about not becoming infected with COVID-19.
