And Now We Have Food Hoarders

I am getting really scared. Up until today, I wasn't really worried about anything connected to the coronavirus. I know there was a shortage of toilet paper and sanitizing stuff which made me pay attention. Today that has all changed to fear.
We ordered our groceries just like we always do every other Saturday. Our poor little shopper couldn't find half of what we ordered. We had to take either an off-brand or store brand or there were a couple of times the store was out completely. She warned me that it would take a while and it took her over 2 hours where it normally takes a shopper only an hour. She said she felt like it was the end of the world and that people were acting crazy.
So now I am worried that there is a good possibility that the stores might run out of food. It's so wrong to hoard all this food where other people can't get any. What is wrong with people? Why are they hoarding food? It just doesn't make sense to me. Thanks for letting me vent

It does, and the bare shelves are reinforcing the supposed scarcity. Monkey brain sees everyone else panicking and decides yes, we need thirty cases of water and toilet paper because everyone else is also hoarding this precious resource.
I can't wait for this lunacy to die down.

That is crazy indeed. I know the supermarket I usually order from announced they would only stay open until 8 PM and then I don't even know what their delivery hours are now.

Our stores are empty too; and I think it's terrible that the hoarders aren't leaving any for anyone else.

@LindaOHio The Kroger here is doing the same thing but their shelves are still bare.

@simone10 They are limiting the shoppers now. My husband went back to the stores early this morning and managed to score all but one thing on the list.

DonĀ“t blame it on the Corona virus. It is people who are acting insane.

Yep - after the whole toilet paper raid, it went calm again, started up again, then the food raid started this week. I'm well stocked, it's the pack rat in me anyway, but it's all not going to last forever. I hope things get calmer, but we'll see how it it goes as days pass.

I went to the grocery store yesterday and I witnessed the bare shelves. It was the cleaning supplies area, the paper products-tissues, paper towels and toiletpaper, the canned vegetable aisle, and the dry pasta aisles. In these cases, there were no products at all, not even the store brands.
I keep a well stocked pantry, a force of habit as we lived out in the country for the majority of our married life together and I just did not have stores really close to me. I am glad that we live like this, especially when I saw the carts full of stuff yesterday, I'd rather buy it gradually an item here or there then all at once and in quantity.

As the days go by its getting scarier. Food shortages and empty shelves are happening all over. I just hope and pray that things calm down before people lose their minds.

Like you these people who hoard are afraid. I saw the same thing happening when we went grocery shopping a few days back. Walmart was packed with people, soups, canned veggies, canned meats --- were nearly all gone. We went from there to Fred Meyer (A Kroger owned store) we found the same situation. I spoke with one lady who had just left Grocery Outlet, and she said she saw the same thing there. We got most of what we were looking for but my wife was disappointed when we could not find any chicken and rice soup.
We have enough to last us a couple of weeks I suppose if we use everything in our cupboard and freezer. (Gods I am glad we bought the freezer a couple of years ago.)

Hoarding is closely monitored here in my place to avoid shortage of supply

They are probably scared to run out of food in case there'll be a lockdown. Fortunately, there's no panic buying where I am from.

I have to admit, seeing stores with empty shelves does alarm me just a wee bit. But, I also have great confidence in our supply chain, so I do not fear we will ultimately run out of what we need. Just may be a little harder to get in the short term.

When you see empty shelves it feels surreal. Your brain just doesn't want to believe what it sees. I now know that we will be ok with food, it just might not be what we want. I am worried about toilet paper. We have enough right now. I just hope we don't have to use alternative measures if we can't get anymore when it runs out.

@simone10 We have plenty of toilet paper for now as well. But I hear ya. It is surreal to see the shelves bare. It's getting better. But now you have the sneeze barriers, the tape on the floor, the lines to aisles and allowing on certain numbers of people in the store at a time. It's just weird out there right now.

We were in Walmart last night trying to do what would basically be our regular weekly grocery shop. It was surreal seeing how many shelves were completely bare. I bought enough broth for one batch of the beef stew recipe I make and took half the available stock. We figured we'd get a few extra cans of beans for chili, a few bags of dried beans to have on hand and replenish the pantry stock, maybe some rice because we're starting to run low. It was mostly cleared out. We were lucky to get a couple bags of dried beans, a few cans of kidney beans, and a couple loaves of bread.
This panic is absurd.
