That One Donut Shop, You Know...The Popular One

Not too long ago, Courtney (@courtlynn) and I were discussing what the proper name is for Dunkin' Donuts. She calls it Dunks. I just normally call it DD. I was telling her that I had read somewhere that they were changing their name, and it was being shortened to Dunkin', yet one of the new stores being built near my house had the Dunkin' Donuts name installed on the big sign on the building. So I had questioned whether or not they were actually changing their name.
Well, lo and behold, this morning on my way to Jacksonville, I came across another new Dunkin' Donuts being built, and as you can see by the photo, it has the name Dunkin' instead of Dunkin' Donuts. So now I'm really confused. What is their name now?
Regardless of whatever their real name is, what do you like to call Dunkin' Donuts?

@DianneN Do you ever remember the old Dunkin' Donuts commercial with the guy who had to get up early every morning to make the donuts? "Gotta make the donuts" he would say as he slowly woke up each morning. I always have those old commercials stuck in my head whenever I go to a DD store!

@moffittjc I couldn’t resist!
We actually called it Dunkin Donuts out of habit.

I love their coffee too. I always get a vanilla bean latte, which is off their secret menu. Half the time, I have to tell the cashiers how to ring it up!

@Marty1 It's still a secret menu item when the Dunkin' Donut employees have no idea what I'm talking about, and no idea how to make it, and I have to show them what to do! lol

Let's go to the donut store and then will tell my hubs it's by which store.
I visited Dunkin' Donuts for the first time last month. Finally used a gift card I had for awhile since I was never near it. The store was recently opened also!

I like to call it the palace of fat..lol. Not really, I call it Dunkin Donuts. Many of them in this area share space with other restaurants like KFC or Baskin Robbins.

@snowy22315 We do have a couple of DD's along our interstate exits that are located inside gas stations. But only along the interstate. The rest throughout the city are in their own stand alone buildings.

Palace of Fat. I like that! lol
All of our Dunkin' Donuts in Gainesville have Baskin-Robbin inside of them, but none have KFC. But if you go into the small towns around Gainesville, all of their DD's have KFCs or Taco Bells inside them.

@moffittjc I'm so thankful we don't have a Krispy Kreme in our town. I have no will power whatsoever. When my mother in law came from Arkansas to visit, I asked her if she'd ever had Krispy Kreme donuts and said, yes, from the grocery store. I told her she really had not ever had Krispy Kreme. We bought some when the hot sign was on and she couldn't believe the difference.

@1creekgirl That's my problem. And I pass by KK every morning on the way to work! My willpower only works when the "Hot N Fresh" sign is not lit up. If that sign is lit up, all bets are out the window!

Yeah, I guessed that this was the reason for the name change. When a business changes it's name, it's a very lengthy and expensive process, and they don't just do it because they can. There's usually an underlying business reason.

@CarolDM I wouldn't have known either if I hadn't stumbled across it by accident a while back. I hardly ever pay attention to the news, so it's a miracle I actually saw the article I did about the name change.

Most of their stores still have the Dunkin' Donuts sign, and haven't changed over to a new sign that just says Dunkin' So I think most people will still call it Dunkin' Donuts.

here we say dunkin' or dunkin' donuts. but others prefer krispy kreme and j.co now.
i wonder if they're going the kfc route? it used to be kentucky fried chicken, until "fried" became a bad word. (that's what i remember reading that time)
so maybe "donuts" has a negative connotation now so they shortened it to dunkin' since people call it that way anyway?

I'm sure that's one of the big reason they changed their name. Also, they want to be known as a coffee shop more than a donut shop, since they consider Starbucks to be their main competitor.

They want to realign themselves to be able to better compete with Starbucks. Dunkin' Donuts wants to rebrand itself as a coffee shop, not a donut shop.

I agree, I think the name should remain Dunkin' Donuts.
