More horses wearing make up and braids

Here is another collage of photos, three of which was taken at the recent West Australian agricultural show that we attended at the weekend. The top two photos are of the same pony. Make-up has been applied around the eyes – a bit too much in my opinion as it makes the pony look like a badger. The same blackening has been added to the knees (front leg joints) and hocks (back leg joints). I think it looks too artificial but the pony did win ribbons so it obviously didn’t count against it too much. The lower left photo is of an endurance horse which has quite a luxurious mane. Putting the mane in plaits or braids means that the horse would not become so hot during the ride. It is important to keep the horse as cool as possible as otherwise it might not pass the vet checks which are held throughout the ride. The last photo is just to show the Clydesdales which were giving rides in a wagon. I didn’t get a separate photo of it unfortunately.

Great pictures. I like the braids. I have never had my own horse, but I used to spend a lot of time at the horse racing track because my father worked there in the past.

For the big races, they sometimes plait up the thoroughbreds too. At least they do in Australia.

Those horses are as "pretty as a picture" oh, it is a picture... Well, anyway those accessories are really cool

I like the braids and have seen them on horses before, but why makeup? That doesn't look right at all.

It's just a fashion that is employed for the show ring. I think they look lovely without it but that's just my opinion.

After seeing your photos, they make me want to return to horseback riding - not jumping. Hubs and I loved it and don’t remember why we stopped. I’m with you on the braiding. It looks beautiful and serves a purpose. I’m not a fan of eye makeup on the horses.

@JudyEv True, but mentioned it to hubs just now. He just said we’d go any time I want. I think I’d better wait until we go north.

Horses that compete in the show ring are mostly likely to have make up and braids.

The black has been overdone I think. And it looks funny on the legs, particularly on the back legs.

The horse looks gorgeous but I think adding makeup to it is odd. I love the braids though. How neat to learn the hair is done to keep them cooler. I thought purely for looks.

In the showring it's just done for looks but in endurance riding looks aren't quite so important.

Fancy..I wonder if someone took their pic and showed it to them, they would understand it was them. I guess some would and some wouldn't..like other animals. Horses are fairly intelligent though.

I like going to the races too but we haven't been for a long time. Do you bet on the races or just enjoy watching the horses?

@JudyEv when I was younger I bet but only small money to make watching more exciting. But not anymore for many years.

Beautiful pictures. I agree with you about the eye and knee makeup. Still, they are beautiful horses and the Clydesdale is also.

that is amazing - how long does it take someone to braid a mane like that?

Maybe only about twenty minutes. Perhaps half an hour. Here is a different way of braiding. This would take a bit longer I think.

I don't see the interest of make up on a horse, and would have not noticed it without your post. Why not a bit of red on the lips ?

I do love the braids, and it makes great sense that they wear the mane like that. I don't know if I care for the eye make up, a bit overdone for my taste. You take great photos.
