Coronavirus spurs local manufacturing

It has always been a concern of mine that Australia produces very little in the way of manufactured products of any kind, be it food, appliances, machinery or anything else. Because of our relatively high wages, local products can’t compete with imported goods from, mostly, third world countries. This is now coming back to bite us as the coronavirus impacts so strongly on our lives.
Between 1947 and the 1980s, a fish and vegetable cannery operated in Albany on Western Australia’s south coast. This is now being redeveloped with the potential to produce 500,000 cans of sardines and 500 tonnes of salmon a year. Hopefully the cannery will lead to increased salmon fishing in the region. At present, salmon is canned in Thailand and the product is cheaper than what will be produced in Albany.
We only have one Australian company producing frozen vegetables. We really need to be more self-sufficient, especially if more pandemics are in the offing. The cannery is expected to employ around 25 people but it will be two years before it is up and running. However, it is a step in the right direction.
The photo is of an artwork in the Albany museum and honours the lighthorsemen who sailed from the port with the horses to take part in World War I.

You are right. In his public speeches regarding the corona virus, our president has his men beside him that includes the secretary of agriculture. He said that we need to produce more food.

One company that supplies sound equipment for huge festivals (and charges us half price for the bits we need for the Shack) will really be feeling the pinch. And I've just posted about another guy who hires out marquees and all sorts of other stuff. He has put off all staff bar one and is desperately trying to come up with another career to tide him over.

Thank you for sharing this good news of advising all of us to be self sufficient in these days.

The news is indicating that the border between our country of Canada and the US will close this weekend. That will change things drastically as both countries cross into the other for a variety of reasons.
Right now the borders are closed to all non-essential travel, open for truck drivers only with a load it seems.

Thanks. I really love this as the lighthorsemen had very close bonds with their horses. It's surprising how many photos I take with myLotters in mind.

Same thing happened here. Unfortunately if and when this ends, all will return to greedy normal.

Yes, you are right. Manufacturing is a must for all countries but it has been given up for the reasons you mention. That along with agriculture
I hope after this , things will balance out.

Everything is changing in this crisis. Cruise lines are offering their ships for the sick, manufacturers of masks, gloves, respirators, etc. will be working full speed... Stay safe and healthy.

funny how globalization was the driver for the last 20 years, only to be the reason everyone is freaking out now.
