The once-mighty Preston River

We had to go to Boyanup a day or two ago to pick up some prescriptions from the chemist there. It also gave us a chance to pick up the mail. The chemist was operating on his own so we drove down to the Preston River to wait the fifteen minutes while he got the tablets together. There was a utility (truck) parked with someone sleeping in the tray but we parked well away from them and took a few photos. You can see part of a bridge in the top left corner. This river sometimes floods and the water will go over that bridge. In earlier times the bridge has been washed away twice. It was nice to get away from the house for a while and we resisted the temptation to buy a beesting at the bakery there. I’m tempted to put a photo of a beesting but I’ll go with one of the little weir on the Preston. Take care, everyone.

I’m glad you got out. We are basically in isolation. I love any water, and this looks very refreshing to look at. What on earth is a beesting?

We're allowed out to shop, get medicines, attend medical appointments. Here's a beesting. I'm really sorry we didn't take our chance and go to the bakers'. Well not really. Better to stay safe.

Is the water low due to a lack of rain?

It's probably about right for this time of year. Once the rains start the river will have more water in it but it only gets to the bridge in times of flood.

I wouldn't want to be near there when it floods. Water can be so treacherous

I can never believe where the water all comes from. That would be a huge amount of water and it has to come from somewhere.

@rebelann No, no mountains. I do know where the water comes from despite what I said. The catchment area is many miles away in the wheatbelt and it channels down various streams and smaller rivers till it gets to the Preston.

@JudyEv It is nice to do that. I can't go to our 4 acres of land in the countryside. It takes many hours to go there.

We have 18 acres of our own that we can wander around so we are very lucky.

@JudyEv may be there is no active habitat around the river.

I've never known anyone to swim in it but I don't know why they don't. Perhaps they do and I just don't know about it.

@Jessicalynnt Yes, the river will rise in winter but hopefully not to flood levels.

Some of the water comes from miles and miles away but gradually filters down to this one river.

It seems an odd name. It's also the name given to the coloestrum of cows, sheep, etc so a strange name for a slice.

@SophiaMorros And all of it is supposed to be English! JimBo in Scotland had never heard of the word and I would have thought he might have. .

@JudyEv I knew it was the name of colostrum (no e in the American spelling) of cows...and considered a delicacy. But in my experience beest is a pudding (North American style pudding not the catch-all British pudding). Language can be so confusing!
