A couple weeks ago, one of my daughter's big pieces of chalk found its way over the brick wall and onto the sidewalk in front of our house. A 13 year old girl found it and left a message on the sidewalk, "I found this chalk. Who does this belong to?" Since then, each day, my daughter and this mystery girl share questions and pictures with each other. We found out her name, how old she is, how many pets she has, that she is an only child, and a pretty talented artist.
Aubrey, my 7 year old daughter, gets so excited each day to see what new message her friend has written. The other day, I saw the girl walking with her grandfather and told her that my daughter lived here and that she had been the one leaving messages. The rain had washed away her message, so I delivered it in person. They still haven't met yet.
It has been raining for days, which has made exchanging messages pretty challenging. I love this special relationship that they have developed through this tough situation, especially because my daughter feels so alone, and really doesn't have many friends to talk to. She has one other one that hadn't called in weeks and it was bringing her down. Now she has a new friend and she feels special.
I hope the rain lets up soon because I wouldn't want them to lose their only source of communication. It is so sweet, in a world where nearly all communication has been replaced by technology, some kids have found a way to do it old school.

That is really neat I hope the two of them can still leave messages to each other when the rain quits.
