I managed to buy seedlings today

We have been waiting since late February for some aluminium flashing tape to arrive at our local hardware store. We need it to patch a hole either in the roof or some part of the solar hot water system. At long last we had a phone call to say it had arrived. As we were going to town, I realised that we’d be at the store very soon after the plant and seedling wholesaler would have delivered his wares. Every other time I’ve tried to buy vegetable seedlings, there have been none available but today I got lucky. I bought a punnet each of broccoli, cabbage and lettuce. There is a limit of one punnet of each type per customer. I think many townsfolk must have known of the delivery times as there was quite a queue at the checkouts and many were carrying seedlings. Hopefully, I’ll get them planted tomorrow. I’ll need to cover the seedlings so the kangaroos don’t demolish them.

I have read recently that the number of seeds and seedlings being sold in our stores has increased tenfold since the lockdown began. It's probably a combination of people being bored and deciding to plant a garden, or people being afraid of food shortages and deciding to grow their own food. I have been thinking about buying some vegetable plants to put in my backyard. Most of my yard is heavily shaded from all the oak and pine trees on my property, but I did notice this morning that there is one small patch of land that gets sunshine throughout most of the day. Maybe I'll plant a garden right there in that little sunny patch.

@JudyEv I think it's fun to watch plants grow. And very satisfying to see the effort you put into it pay off.

At the very least, it's therapeutic to grow plants. It takes a lot of thought and effort to keep a person/family supplied with vegies for any period of time but even producing some of your own food is a good idea.

@JudyEv no, but summer in California is usually pretty dry. The sprinklers didn’t do much good and neither did watering them.

It will be an interest for me and, as we can't go anywhere, I'll be able to take care of my plants.

Can you grow a tomato in a pot on your balcony?

@simone10 I see. So plants in pots are out of the question.

You lucked out with getting your seedlings. I think many people are thinking more about a garden this year since food shopping is difficult. Nothing beats home-grown and I'm sure you're going to enjoy all your fresh garden vegetables.

Growing enough for your own needs would be difficult but certainly home-grown is really flavoursome.

So funny to hear about kangaroos. With us it's deer and rabbits that eat the seedlings. No 'roos here! :-)

This is a very great idea You live in a place with a big land and if I were you, I would take good advantage of it Some vegetables don't need to have the seedlings or even seeds. Such as you can cute the head of the carrot/cabbage, lettuce, and then you can plant it directly in the land. And you can cute potatoes into big pieces and you can also plant them directly inside the soil. There are many videos from Youtube about it and it will give you many inspirations

I've started potato plants like that before. It's keeping the pests out that is the main problem.

My yard has a lot of bushes, so not much room to plant things. I had some strawberry seeds and I planted them between two bushes. It did that this afternoon. I hope they grow well, or at all.

@JudyEv it would sure make them easier to come by right now. I don’t remember how long they take to grow. Hopefully by summer I will have at least a few fresh ones.

Squirrels are the culprits here. They’ve destroyed my neighbors’ tomato plants every time they’ve tried to grow them.

Squirrels might be worse than roos as they'd scamble up any barriers.

@wolfgirl569 They won't but there is no way I could be self-sufficient in vegies - not without fencing the kangaroos out.

@JudyEv I figured it worked the same as our planters, though I actually dont know what if the things plants come in have individual names, like we can get them in 4 or 6 or even more sections

Punnets used to be full of seedlings but now they consist of eight tiny pockets with just one plant in each.

You are lucky you can go to such places. At the moment we aren't allowed to shop anywhere except supermarkets, pharmacies and places delivering essentil services.
