My compost bin

In the picture is my 2nd compost bin. That's where we throw the unused parts of vegetables and fruits. It is covered with dry grass and it is only for the camera so the cover is removed. The earthworms eat the edibles that they convert into vermicompost which is a type of fertilizer.

We cannot have an "open" one, I have one that has a cover on top.

@Alexandoy It's not for the odor, it is because here an open one attracts slugs.

@LadyDuck ah, yes, insects as well. I almost forgot the insects because I always spray the new edibles with apple cider vinegar to protect it against insects. Even the ants have a hard time in rummaging.

The cover is the dry grass so that if there is odor, it will not fill the air.

I used to have a compost bin at my previous home, and I remember how rich and fertile the material would be after composting for a lengthy time. And you are right about the earthworms, they do a great job of converting the waste into usable material.

@moffittjc that long wait is only for the humus. But the vermicompost which is the soil coming from the earthworms are quick to appear when the soil is always wet.

What I want is the humus that comes from the rotten leaves. It is very rich as a fertilizer although it takes 6 months to have it.

@Alexandoy That is the hard part about having a compost bin, having to wait for such a long period of time to get the rich fertilizer from it.

That is good. Homes should have that compost bin so the edibles can be thrown there and not in the garbage can anymore.

Yes, it is double purpose. It serves as the trash bin for the edibles. And it will return as fertilizer.

Yup, that's vermiculture all right. I actually bury the peelings with a little soil. Two weeks, and it's earth and worms.
