I was heading out to the garden the other day when I noticed this strange looking moth on Duke's doghouse. I pulled my camera out to get a photo. I am assuming it is a moth and not a butterfly. I have never seen a moth like this before. Or butterfly. Nature never ceases to amaze me!! There are so many pretty butterflies, moths, animals, flowers, etc. for us to enjoy. Beauty is all around us. We just have to open our eyes and see it. I did a quick search to identify this little guy and it appears to be a giant leopard moth. Have you seen something pretty in nature today? Have you seen a giant leopard moth before? © 2020 Karen Gros, All rights reserved.

Cool! I was going to name all the chickens after rock and roll singers and country singers until I decided that I would never keep them all straight. ha!

@kareng That is true since out of respect of the memory of the late singer Donna Summer, I would never name an animal after her.

I've never seen a moth like that before. Most moths are very ugly. This one is actually pretty nice looking. Where is it native to? It doesn't look like something that belongs in your neck of the woods.

They have been distributed throughout the United States according to what I found online. It appears they are native to Australia.

@moffittjc I read that they were very destructive to fruit trees. I don't have any so I'm good there. I hope this one got blown away with the wind with our daily storms. Don't need my garden eaten up. So far the deer and pigs have not bothered it.

@kareng Hmmm....are they damaging to any crops or trees or bushes? Sometimes insects that arrive here that aren't native can be devastating to flora and fauna.

That's a beautiful moth. I think we only have boring moths around here. Nothing fancy or out of the ordinary.

@just4him Yes, that is what I found too. They can be very destructive to plants so I hope he went to visit somewhere else!

Me either, my very first. They are disruptive to fruit trees and a lot of plants so I hope he or she doesn't have a lot of friends and family around!

I agree, he is totally cool. I just found out they love to eat fruit trees and other various plants so hope he went back to his old place and don't invite his friends and relatives over here!
