Sparrow

Since I often read topics about birds (and bird feeders) I came up with the idea to write something about a sparrow. But not about an ordinary sparrow but about a city hero. The sparrow is a symbol (mascot) of the city of Belgrade.
The story of this bird takes us back to the ancient times of the fight against the Turks (Ottoman Empire) In the 15th century (more precisely in 1456)
And it goes like this ...
Fierce battles were fought over Belgrade against the Ottoman Empire.
A large army was raised, the fight lasted a long time, the Christians fought fiercely, even the clergy got involved in the defense of the city. The worst moment was the breakthrough of 700 janissaries inside the walls ...
Belgrade was defended. However, a large number of Christians were killed.
The scenes inside the city walls were more than shocking, but the saddest thing was finding a sparrow that was pierced with three arrows.
This brave little bird took part in one of the most important defenses of Belgrade.
That is how the sparrow became a symbol of Belgrade..

@LowRiderX the sparrow is also common in Africa according to an African I met in Singapore. Maybe it can be called the universal bird.

@Alexandoy Yes, it is very likely that there are some there as well, but as I said, there are many types and they do not look the same to the eye, probably in other respects as well. The one in the picture above is a female, the male has slightly darker wings and that's exactly what they look like here

@GardenGerty It was written that the scene was horrible, too sad. I can't even imagine what happened to people if a sparrow passed like that

Wow. That's the best legend I've read in recent times. Thanks very much for narrating.
To think that a sparrow, so common a bird, would selflessly give one's self for the whole community. That stands as a metaphor to the common citizen, too. Love it.
And to think that the sparrow is also endemic to my country, and my people have used the sparrow in a sinister way, gosh, I will spare you the story. Hu hu

@LowRiderX That person was blessed by god for that he will only die when he want. When ever someone take an oath then his name taken like in our language Bhisma Pratigya (Bhisma Oath) because he took that oath because of his father said that keep protect nation till you last breath and he take own that he will not marry and will only fight from his nation or his part. He was blessed by many gods.
Once time comes that king of his own nation was doing bad thing and did harm people of pandas(5 brothers who also belong from same family.) Situation like of war but as you and me both know when truth and false do fight truth always win and god also take side of truth.
Due to his oath, he has to fight from side even he know its going on wrong. He has that power and very expert and war like archery that its impossible to defeat him. But i am sure you know Lord Krishna he was in side of truth so he guide opposition that what to do.
Bhisma also took one oath that he will not use any weapon against woman because he respect them. So they use tricks that keep one person infront of him who was woman in last berth , who thought bhisma did. wrong with her so to take revenge she joined.
Bhisma want himself that opposition will win this war because they are fight for truth so when Arjun use arrow to Bhisma then he keep saying you win my blessings with you. Arjun and Bhisma has great bond and even arjun too crying while throwing arrows to him. At last he thrown lots of arrow and this situation comes that it passes from all his body and made bed of Arrows. He still didn't die until war finish because of his blessing that he will only die when he want.

What a sad story I have house sparrows in a stack structure which was once used for my furnace. Guess that sparrow did not fly away fast enough.

People who come from Newcastle, 'geordies.' Such like celebrities as 'Ant and Dec' and my Granddad... who wasn't a celebrity, but was a pretty big deal in my life of course. Call Sparrows Spuggies. I wrote a poem about this once but I don't know what I did with it. Anyway thank you for reminding me of my Granddad and for your knowledge of the bird.
