Theories on Atlantis

Hi everyone, Atlantis is something that fascinates me and I love learning about theories about its origin, if there was any historical basis at all. My favourite theory is that it comes from distorted stories about the Minoans on Crete and Santorini. What do you guys think?

It's just a myth for me. I don't have enough knowledge about that doomed city under the sea.

@Nakitakona That’s nice, me too. This Wikipedia page about Atlantis is a really good place to start if you wanted to learn a little about some theories (including the one I mentioned before):

That's cool. I remember watching a documentary about it a few years ago. I don't remember what it was called or which channel it was on (it might have been BBC), but I do remember that it was about the theory I mentioned, that the Minoans were the origin of the Atlanteans.

Maybe it did exist and the gradual melting of polar icecaps caused it to "sink" or it may have been on the edge of a tectonic plate or something.

That's actually a really cool theory! I tend to think that the most likely explanation is that there was some kind of dramatic event which led to the 'sinking', rather than a very gradual one, but I think that could be reconciled with your suggestion of icecaps melting. In some circumstances, an icecap can melt from inside and exert enough pressure on the remaining ice parts that it suddenly breaks, releasing a tsunami-esque wave of water.

I'm also interested in myths and legends. I only know a few things about Atlantis. But I think it's just a myth. But who knows right?

I guess the only way of ever proving that a particular place was actually Atlantis would be if an inscription was found that actually says ‘Atlantis’. But one reason I think the Minoans were the Atlanteans is that the citadel of Atlantis is a really good match for Santorini. The shape and size is basically exactly the same, with the only major difference being the fact that Atlantis was said to have three rings of land around it, whereas Santorini only has one.
Another thing is that the main god of the Atlanteans was said to be Poseidon, and that really was the main god of the Minoans. There are lots of other similarities too

Indeed! It’s often the case that myths and legends have a grain of truth to them, however small.

Well if my theory is correct, you can! It’s Santorini, and it’s actually a really popular tourist destination these days

There are various places that researchers say that Atlantis is there, some say it is in the Atlantic Ocean, others in the Sahara Desert, I think it is somewhere in the Mediterranean, I live in Malta and Malta although it is a very small island has alot of Neolithic temples, and researchers say that Sicily and Malta were one piece of land.
