A sprout in my bathroom sink

Just now before bed I was brushing my teeth. In the sink drain, I saw three little green things poking up. Broccoli off my teeth? Mushroom-style fungus? No, it was three little chia seeds that had sprouted! One of them is nearly a centimeter long including its root, and they all have the two-leaf seedling appearance (very tiny). I eat chia seeds in my yogurt so they are still fresh, and if not chewed but get stuck in my teeth, apparently they are still very much alive and can sprout! I pulled them out of the drain and put them on a nice wet kitchen sponge. i hope they will take root, because you can eat chia sprouts. Do you remember the "chia pet" where they were shaped as some animal on a base that they could grow? I always wanted one but my parents would never get one for me. Now I have my own pet chia that sprang up in my sink! I think I may put a few more unsprouted seeds on the sponge too! Any unexpected vegetables or other things for you today?

I always wanted a chia pet too but never got one. My son got one when he was younger but I don't nt remember what happened to it.

We bought my mother a ceramic sheep once and that sprouted a 'fleece' of some type of seed.

I'm guessing that was chia.

@petatonicsca Oh wow! They are so cute! I'm nearly tempted to get one for myself.

I am hearing the chia seed name for the first time. Not grown in my country India but looks like it is a seed commonly found in Mexico country and used for weight loss.

It's also good because it is high in omega-3 fatty acids to help lower cholesterol. I like them to add a bit of crunch, fiber, and protein. I didn't know about the weight loss thing. Also if you soak them they get like a gel on the outside that we can use in gluten free baking to bind the flours together. They are pretty expensive but last a long time since I use so little at a time.

@petatonicsca good to know the health benefits of the chia seed. What are the dishes you make with the chia seed?

@jayanth_77 I add them to breads and cookies, and also sometimes sprinkle them on my yogurt or salad. A lot of people make "chia pudding" by soaking them in juice or milk overnight and they make a kind of tapioca-type round gel, but I don't like them that way. I like mine to crunch.
