Egg scam?

I went to my Russian grocery store yesterday and got a carton of regular jumbo brown eggs. Paid $2.79. They seemed to have gone down in price as they were $2.99 recently. That's still a lot though for eggs that are not cage free or organic. There were only a few cartons of these eggs left. I always check what's inside before buying to make sure they are not cracked. All of them had cracked eggs but one so took that one. Didn't really pay attention to size or color. When I got home and started transferring the eggs to my egg holder I noticed that most of the eggs were nowhere near jumbo. They were large at best. Some even seemed like they were medium. And one didn't even look brown. I am not totally against eating smaller sized eggs but if I am buying jumbo ones I expect them to be jumbo, especially when they are not cheap. If the supplier doesn't have jumbo eggs he/she shouldn't package them as such. Otherwise it's a rip-off.

Unfortunately you can't size them before you get them home. But yeah, it sucks to feel like you've been bamboozled.

A lot of the time large eggs are pretty small. More like medium I’d say. I’ve never gotten medium eggs before.

@porwest I prefer jumbo but I usually get the cheapest brown eggs in the store. Don’t care if they are organic or cage free or free range or vegetarian, etc. So long as they are brown and at least large.

@lovebuglena I always get large and they are just fine for me. I don't really buy anything smaller than large either.

You need to talk to the company the eggs came from and the store manager about the egg sizes. The price decrease would be from it is now laying season for chickens and they lay more often in summer, like every day. You could take it further can call the BBB or the attorney general for your state if an on-going problem. You should document with photos.

@lovebuglena You need to report to store manager so he can be on top of it and address the company. Nothing will happen if nobody complains. The eggs may get smaller and smaller. Several complaints and he will take action.

First time this happened to me. And the store manager can't know what's inside the carton. I should be more aware next time and pay attention to the size of the eggs before I buy them.

Oh That`s sad. I never experienced something like that around here so far. You`re right they are not cheap and you want to buy the best and the right one you paid for

I am not sure if they are the best eggs. After all, they are not cage free or organic, etc. But they are the cheapest brown eggs and they are the biggest. Everything else is much more expensive and smaller in size.

@MALUSE I learned there are also pastel, olive, and blue eggs and each one has varying tones. Those are very expensive for some reason. Price depends on color and amount of eggs. I saw them on Etsy for $12+ for half dozen to $25 for dozen eggs. Wonder if there is any difference to the taste. The description said: "Chicken's Eggs: Pasture Raised, Free Range, Naturally Fed Heritage Breeds."

That is disappointing. It does sound like somebody was trying to put one over.

@lovebuglena It sounds like they just threw a bunch of mismatched eggs in there, and tried to charge for a jumbo container.

@snowy22315 I hope this will not happen again. I gotta really pay attention to what's in the carton before I buy it.

It is. Don't remember it happening before. At least not where most of the carton was like that.

I would contact the manufacturer and voice your complaint. You may get a credit or a coupon for your efforts.

Usually they are fairly the same size when I get them. Some eggs are even extra jumbo or double yolk ones.
