Meteora

If you ever wondered where the Earth ascends to Heaven, the answer is - on Meteora! Rocks formed by tectonic movements more than 25 million years ago. Meteora, which means (literally) 'hovering in the air' is a monastic city on the top on the rocks 240 km south of Thessaloniki (Greece) In the period of XIV - XVI century, there were a total of 24 monasteries, there are only 6 today (4 males and 2 females) During one of my trips, I visited one of them - Monastery Varlaam. Founded in the middle of XIV century ascetic Hosios Varlaam, by which he was named (In my opinion, one of the most beautiful) Except the tower, with the old net preserved, used by the first monks for their ascents and descents, there you can also see large oak barrels from XVI century for water storage. The old dinning room was turned into a museum, while the other buildings in the monastery are the kitchen and the hospital. It is interesting to note that the material has been collected for over 20 years and the construction itself took only a few months. meteora is equally impressive to visit in both, summer and winter. Picture is mine

My husband and I have visited Meteora. It was absolutely astonishing! We spent time in a nunnery and were served homemade cookies by the nuns.

@LowRiderX We didn’t stay overnight. We were there about 13 years ago. Driving up to Meteora gave me goosebumps.

@DianneN That was probably a long time ago, because it's gone. At the foot of the mountain there are two villages with private accommodation, as well as several high category hotels. Now there are working hours of the monastery and they are locked quite early, already around 4 -5 pm depending on the monastery. I'm glad you were, then you know very well what I'm talking about and how beautiful it is

@DianneN I believe, the road is a little bandy Did you visit several monasteries on that occasion or just one?

Greece is surely a great place to visit. I wonder how they built it in ancient times.

Is the Meteora a tourist place now or still a monastery? Is any one allowed to enter?

@eileenleyva Yes both, it is a tourist place and monasteries and entry is allowed in each of the 6 remaining, ticket is paid 3 euros. Depending on the monastery, the entrances are now adapted to tourists and this time, some are reached by stairs that go around the rock to the top and in some over the bridge that is connected to the ground

@cool83 Those who want can, but I think they have to apply to one of the agencies down in the village, at the foot of the mountains. Tourists are don't climb like that. Depending on the monastery, some have steps around the rock to the top, and some bridges that are connected to the ground

@cool83 You can't climb a rock without equipment, ropes. Tourists use stairs, made of stone, and they are quite wide, not even 1% is dangerous

@Juliaacv I talked to my family for days, I think I drowned themAlthough we were all together thereWe also took my father, he was not thrilled at all, at first he didn't even want to go to the monastery because he couldn't see how to get to the top anywhere Afterwards, he agreed that it was 'nice', but that's all. A nice?? It's perfect!!!!

@birjudanak Thank you! On that occasion, I took a million photos here is another one to see (this is the second monastery out of a total of 6) The monastery can be reached very easily, by steps that go around the rock in a circle to the top or a stone bridge connected to the ground, depends on the monastery
