How should be acknowledge the caller to speak ahead while our phone rings?

I know the subject of this conversation is not titled appropriately but this is what I could write in least possible time, I am sorry if you opened the box and found something unexpected here. I want the people to suggest me if it is not awkward to receive the phone call from a known contact and then reply 'Yes Nikki, tell me' ... How appropriate is this 'tell me' here?
It is like I found many of us Indians would answer the phone call in such a way which I suspect is little awkward. If you are an English speaker with English as your first language , could you suggest something?

I usually say hello if I don't know who is calling. When my best friend calls, I always say hey.

@parpande I probably would ask why they called me. My best friend usually tells me why she called first thing.

Are you saying that your standard greeting is "Yes Nikki, Tell me." Instead of "Hello", "Hi", "Hey", or "Howdy" ?

Nikki is any random name here. The recipient needs to actually tell 'go ahead and speak' ... in that context is that weird or common to say 'Tell me ....'?

@parpande In a westerners perspective, that sounds rude and abrupt. It sounds as if you are in a hurry / impatient or don't want to talk to the person.
Here most people say "hello, hey, hi, howdy" etc.
or maybe "good morning, afternoon, evening" .

Yes we Indians speak that way instead of the usual " Hello". But it's not for all calls. it's only if the person calling is our best friend or family members .
