Peaceful Protests and You

The photo here was taken from my older son’s Manhattan rooftop during a peaceful protest a few days ago. Those are the ones that barely make the news.
My daughter-in-law and granddaughter wanted to join the protest as they usually do, but due to the virus stayed home.
My husband is also one who supports human rights. He has marched peacefully in many protests to share his beliefs in what he feels is unjust.
I feel strongly about many things but have never marched.
Have you?

Your son and his family are staying safe, good news. I'm afraid of a peaceful protest. If only one idiot shows up, this could start an outbreak of violence. Remember the Boston Marathon's horrendous experience? It only took one, to mastermind that criminal act of devastation.

@DianneN It only takes one nutcase, to trigger off an act of violence. Some killed were innocent children, who came to watch the race.

There were many marches in Italy when I was a teenager, I supported many of them, but my parents never let me join, simply because bad elements (paid by political parties) often created disorders just to cast a bad shade on peaceful protesters... nothing has changed in 50 years.

Yes we have had protests where hooligans joined the act and caused violence- broke shops, and even looted or fired or threw stones at the cops.
In turn, cops have to resort to Tear gas shells, water cannons(in use sometimes) or in the extreme case -direct firing.
In some large scale violence cases, Para Military or Army is called in to rein in the miscreants.

What kind of political parties? Far right? Communist? Others?

That's exactly what is happening here. Our President does nothing except to incite more violence and make up his own rules.
He's one of the biggest racists on our planet.
I don't like being in large crowds and am fearful of my own safety, so I help out in other ways for causes I believe in. This is one of them.

I did march in a low turnout protest, where our school too participated way back in 1990. I was in the Eighth class.
However, I normally skip such protests as many turn into violent ones.

@DianneN oftn peaceful protests turn into violent ones, owing to mischief by political parties or individuals with bad interests, or anti social elements.

@DianneN Yes indeed. And some pictures and videos floating on WhatsApp and other media of people coming in cars and looting TV, shoes and other things from the shops is very sad indeed. This is also unacceptable.

I was always afraid that I would be the one that would get arrested so I never did protest.
I did start a protest in Las Vegas in my 20's. We paid for a show that included two drinks and the singer had a sore throat and I stood up and asked if we were going to get our money back. They did not know. So I yelled everyone keep yelling we want our money back and everyone in the room joined me.
We got our money back. It was $100 a ticket and we would have been out $200 for nothing.

Yes you are right. Even a few folks could make a peaceful activity turn into a violent one. We have seen cases where those staging a peace march that turned violent being probed by police, whereas other criminals had done their bit to make it violent.

Yes racism is a curse against Modern civilizations and should go away from everywhere across the planet. But it would take time and mindset changes.

@Butterfingers they have had a long history of racial discrimination and conflicts. A number of civil law changes and other changes did made a difference but social issues still remain. Sometimes that turns into something violent.

I had marched against the Vietnam War when I was younger and when Trump was elected, I have become a marcher again--although now, with the virus, and my age, I feel like marching may be too risky

@DianneN We have had mostly peaceful protesting during the day--and the rioting at night seems to have calmed down--

Many marched against the Vietnam War and so glad you did.
Marching is definitely too risky because of the virus now and the violence that protests have turned into.
Gone are the peaceful marches in many communities, especially the larger cities.

@divalounger Yes, it seems to be getting much better except for the police brutality as recently as yesterday.
Let's hope that improves soon, too.

I stood with protesters for about a half an hour on Friday, before I had to leave for work. It was a very peaceful protest. Honestly, it was more of a vigil for the many African-Americans whose lives have been ended so tragically. But like you said, it's these types of protests that are calm and peaceful that don't get any media attention whatsoever. And it's such a shame. People are trying to push for change without hurting anyone or damaging anything. Why can't the media help the cause instead of hurting it?

I’m proud of you and happy it was a peaceful protest.
Many protests are peaceful, but those that incite the crowds and cause violence and damage to personal property are doing no good for the cause - any cause. The media is making things worse.

@DianneN I agree the media is making things worse. I think it's high time we stand up to the media and let them know that peaceful change is what's going to change this country for the better, and they either need to get on board or get out of our way.

No, never. No matter how peaceful the protests are, there is always a problem, I do not want to attend. And here in Europe, there were protests yesterday, I watched a live broadcast. I support human rights, every life is important

I haven't marched in any kind of protest. The reason is ; often such peaceful protests turn violent caused by some bad elements in the group. Police then hit all the protestors with batons and rubber bullets

I have never taken part in any protests. I'm outraged at those that are violent and taking lives of others that have nothing to do with the reason for rioting. And setting fire to buildings, looting store they broke into? That is nothing but stealing. They should all be arrested and stay in jail for awhile. Nothing against peaceful protests, that is how they should be!

ok and yes, I do not blame you for not wanting to be in large crowds. Yesterday I went out and took care of two things and had another but no energy or wanting to go out again. Usually I would go out again so could get all done on the same day, but, this virus has really gotten to me and hate being around people right now.

We do support protesters for human rights violations silently. We never go to the streets carrying protest placards or shouting. We just stay at home, monitoring news in the TV.

@DianneN I am very much the same. I don't like crowds and I like to work from the background. I use my volunteer positions to lead people in the direction I believe they need to be pointed. But when something hits close to home, I find I am motivated to step outside my comfort zone and get involved. The last time I joined a protest march, I guess that was three years ago, was when our illustrious president had stated he was cutting funding for the sciences. Specifically, he was defunding Sea Grant who happens to be running the Science Center where I volunteer. They do so much nationally to educate the public, losing them would be a major blow to education everywhere. Their biggest issue back then was they did not promote themselves, instead, they spent their money and energy making science education better for everyone.
