This is the story of a family, The Brogans, who were living in London during the second world war. Their son, Charlie, is away fighting while his wife is working as an exotic dancer in a nightclub. Charlie does not know this and he is heartbroken when he sees a picture of her in a magazine. He also has an injured shoulder and he is sent home to recover. When he gets home , he also finds out that his baby son is being neglected by his wife. He splits up with his wife and tries to get custody of his son, but he is finding it very difficult because in those days, the powers that be would insist that children stay with their mothers even if they are not well looked after. Also, during this time, Charlie has a lot of contact with a very good friend of their family, who will have a huge influence on the decisions that Charlie will have to make in all their lives.

It is an interesting story. I have read another book recently by the same author which featured many of the same characters from the family in this story.

@lazydaizee That is too bad that Charlie could not get custody of his baby son. The poor kid. That is too bad that after Charlie was injured and came home to what is going on with his baby and how his wife neglected him and still got custody.

@lazydaizee I understand why you do not want to spoil it for others. I am still curious that will happen.

I cannot say exactly what happened in the story because that would spoil it for other readers. But the end of the story did have a few surprises.

This rule has gone awry that the child is with his mother, he will continue to see the time and the human being, but it must be decided that it was very bad with Charlie, he should have got the child's custody

I agree, Charlie would be the better parent , but in those days, the law favoured the mother for some reason.

I wonder if Charlie had been away on active service for 18 months??? Yes the judiciary was very much in favour of awarding custody to the woman rather than the man even when it was not in the kids best interests.
