Do you have hope for our future?

In my last post I mentioned about a video that I seen where a group of young teens and a group of adults were having a conversation. I don’t know what exactly it was, but I came into the video when a 14 year old white female asked the adults of mixed races, “do you have hope for our future”. A simple question but it stopped me in my tracks. I was without words thinking if I was there how would I answer that question. I have thought about this question for a few days now and I’m not sure I have a better answer now than I did then. So, what is my answer to her? The easy answer is, “I have hope but I am afraid for what it could be”. That would be the easy way out of answering the question. If I was truthful and had to explain, the answer could still stand. The word hope as a noun meaning a feeling of expectation and desire for a certain thing to happen. While the verb meaning to want something to happen or be the case. In the case of the verb, yes, I want you to have a bright future where people do not have such hate for each other and people could live in peace. Where race is not such an issue as it is today. The problem is I don’t expect that to be the case. I have a feeling, things are going to get a whole lot worse for our country before they ever get better. I have always loved history, it has always interested me. One thing I have learned over the years is that every great society eventually falls. Think about it, Persian Empire, Roman Empire, Arab Empire, Mongol Empire, British Empire. They all fell eventually.

I guess that in times like we are facing today, it is easy to become fearful about the future. Honestly, I am optimistic that things will get much better. I do not disagree that things might get a lot worse first. As for the race issue. I don't see that being completely resolved in my lifetime. There is so much there to be dealt with. I have adopted a colorblind attitude about people. I will and do treat everyone the same. It is my belief that if you hold yourself out as different, whether that be by color, by nationality, by beliefs, then you must be willing to accept that some people are going to find fault with that difference and you must also accept that they have the right to that opinion. How things will be better? That is very hard to put a finger on. None of us have a crystal ball. I believe we will get past this coronavirus and life will go on. I believe that we will find a solution to the ugly clashes of the political ideologies that are going on as well. I seriously doubt the solution will be what either side is looking for but will be something that falls somewhere between the extremes that are being expressed. Things have been severely divided in our government before. Granted once that led to a civil war. I've even heard whispers and rumors being batted around for several years now about another civil war coming, but I have strong doubts that will happen. Not right now anyway. While there are some groups on the edges of society that would like to see that, they don't seem to have the hearts of people of this country with them on their extremist views. How many does it take to start a war? I don't have that answer either. As for me, I am taking each day as it comes, I do what I can to lead by example. I try to post alternative points of view when I see extremist items come up. The bottom line for me: it is up to each of us to work toward a great outcome -- the outcome we would like to see. We may only be able to take tiny little steps in that direction but each one of those is one less obstacle to overcome. Mahatma Gandhi had a wonderful quote attributed to him. "Become the change you want to see." I do try to follow that, though it is exceedingly difficult at times.

I appreciate your comment. If each person did better we as people would be better off. The hard part is getting everyone to do a little better.

@cperry2 I don't have a huge platform to be heard on but I do what I think is best and hope that is good enough. I treat others with respect no matter who they are until they treat me wrong, then I have no time for you. I hope that is enough to show others to do the same.

@Bensen32 I agree. Too many will throw up their hands and say -- I ain't nobody, I can't do a thing. But the fact is, they can but they won't. This is why things have gotten so ugly recently, Too many people walking away when they need to deal with the issues in front of them. I am in no position to affect much, I write letters, I post responses, I vote, and I volunteer to be out in public and use that in any way I can to ease tensions. Do these help? I hope so, but there is no way to measure that.

We are living in difficult days and there are worse days coming before God changes things for the better and so I have lots of hope.

Well I do hope you are right and I am wrong. I feel for the younger generations, they are the ones that need to make it a better world or things are going to be really hard for them.

@kanuck1 When do I think it was good? Well I'm not sure I would say it was "good" but it seems to me that it is getting worse by the day.

There is always hope, sometimes though you just have to wait it out, and hope even more that whenever you are at your lowest - there is no way but Up. don't swim too long "down there". What you said: "The problem is I don’t expect that to be the case. I have a feeling, things are going to get a whole lot worse for our country before they ever get better." I also feel this for our country. Even more that now they are passing so many laws unrelated to the pandemic and how they can help the people. they are doing things to let the poor people struggle even more. =( I swear its worst to be from Philippines right now. Our government gave up and left us for ourselves. I love history too, No matter how great the empires, and dynasties were, they eventually had to fall because there is always those that are greedy, wanting more for themselves - bringing everyone down.

Very much it has to do with greed. Greed of money and greed of power. I assume all countries are under the same risk of those things.

I half agree with you. But I think about the planet instead of countries. Country boundaries are created by a few men.

You are not wrong however it is easier for me to talk about my country since I know it better then other countries. I don't think I have the right to talk about say a country like Chile since I really know nothing about it. I never been there, I don't know what it is like to live there, I can't say whether it is a good place to live or not. Does that make sense? I know that I think the world needs a lot more love and respect of each other and I believe that would make the world a better place, but how/when that happens, I do not know.

When a society falls people often do not realize it. There was still a Roman emperor in the 9th C, although it had fallen 5 centuries before. And with a bit of sarcasm I would say that some Britons think that there is still a British Empire. Due to computers taking a space more important in our lives every day our economic system has to evolve, but such thing happens every couple of centuries, so I believe we are very lucky to live at such a moment. I have definitely hope in a progress that at the end always creates a better world for the generations to come. Any attempt to stop it has always failed.

Yeah, I suppose there was still an empire yet it was not once what it was. The greatness it once was is gone, kind of like America is becoming.

My husband and I recently talked about how all kingdoms and empires eventually fall, wondering if we might be close to this country's end. But I believe that God may be allowing our decline because as a nation, we've continued to reject him in every area of our lives and government.

@Bensen32 I understand, but I do believe God has blessed our country from the beginning because so many Americans did follow him.

@1creekgirl Perhaps you might be right. Maybe it is from my perspective but I think there are many who still believe but maybe they just keep it to themselves a lot. They don't speak out about it. of course, there are many who do not believe and also keep it to themselves.

I guess I am one to blame in your way of thinking in a way. I am not a believer as you may know. But I am not one who thinks it should be taken out of our schools/government. I don't believe the words "in God we Trust" need to be removed from anything. Our county was founded on the belief of freedom including religion and by mostly Christian beliefs. Many live a better life due to their belief in their God and maybe a fear of their God and that is okay with me.
