I tried today to make the kids leave their mikes off and just sign, but that didn't work very well. I also tried having them practice fingerspelling in pairs; I assigned pairs and they were supposed to type their answers in the chat for their partners to see. It took them a while to figure out that there were supposed to be several people working at one time but finally they got it. If we were in a classroom, I would have paired them off and had them sign to each other for most of the class practice time.
One of the girls wanted to know if I thought that a deaf person she knows will be able to understand her if she signs. Since we are in Japan, I said, "Not if she uses Japanese sign language but yes if she uses American sign language." The Deaf woman is apparently educated in the States so my student thinks she knows American Sign Language. It would be really cool if my student can use what she has learned in real life.
What have you been able to use in real life that you learned in a class?

On campus I learned how to embroider to decorate clothes, hats and bags. During this pandemic, I found it difficult because there were no lecturers to teach. So I learned it on YouTube and finally I was able to embroider my mom and my sister's clothes.

YouTube has nearly everything you need to learn anything, but having a teacher there to actually answer your questions it helps. What kind of embroidery are you putting on your mom and sister's clothes? I used to do embroidery for my friends' baby clothes.

Interesting question. Definitely not Maths which I really hated at school. And other exact sciences. However school gave me a nice push English-wise, I had an amazing teacher, who already passed away unfortunately... Due to this teacher I chose my life path, I suppose. Also I learnt the basics of competition at school, since I took part in lots of olympiades. Generally it's thought that school doesn't give knowledge, but rather develops your brain to be able to solve life problems. But honestly I'd rather they taught smth really important at school like cooking, cleaning, taking care of kids, surviving and stuff.

Things like cooking and cleaning would be helpful. Our school does have a home ec class where kids learn a bit about cooking and sewing, and an industrial arts class where they learn to operate things like a saw.

@petatonicsca we also had smth like that but judging from the fact that being a schoolgirl I was afraid of a piece of meat, I'm not sure those classes were very successful. Everyone was just sitting and eating stuff, listening to music, chatting:))))

I'm sure there are a number of things from most classes I couldn't remember if asked right now but they would come back if I needed them.

Won't the woman be blown away if the young girl can 'talk' to her? Learning sign language seems quite popular ar the moment.

Sign language is quite difficult and I think requires proper dedication for us to learn
