... of Lockdown So a holiday planned back in January, for 2 weeks at the end of August, to get some exposure to sun, sea and sand in Spain, was cancelled this week. The airline cancelled and is in the process of refunding the amount we paid for 3 return flights ("allow 28 days"). The accommodation we had organised still stood, but when we looked for alternative flights, they were from a further-away airport and with a more mercenary airline (the Biggest European Low-Fares Airline, as they once called themselves). Anyway, it looks like the lady who owns the apartment we had booked for two weeks is understanding and may refund all of our deposit, so no loss except for the prospect of a damper, cooler summer at home this year. I did research on the risk levels of flying within Europe, and found that air travel is still firmly in the high-risk zone (as shown in the graphic attached), so... Also various parts of Europe (Catalonia in Spain, Leicester in England, to name but two) have re-entered lockdown for two weeks due to excessive rises in the numbers of people detected with COVID-19 in the preceding few days. Methinks, in these times, discretion may well be the better part of valo(u)r. How do you feel about travel for anything more than a local visit to the shops at this time?

I hope you get a complete refund given the unforeseen pandemic. I personally only want to travel to the stores that have the goods I need and maybe I'll visit a friend which is ok since none of us have the dreaded virus. I hope you'll remain safe from this resurgence of Covid.

@rebelann Truth be told, they are probably trying to protect their hospitals from being swamped with sick people...

I do hope the means of controlling this beastie with a vaccine or similar comes soon... It's very disruptive trying to work around the constraints that appear as state or government bodies try to minimize its spread.

I'm just going to play it safe and not travel at all, unless driving in my own vehicle. Better to be safe than sorry.

Wise, I think. Visiting new places can be nice, but knowing you can get back home without extra delay or cost is paramount. So why leave home in the first place...?

@pgntwo I am a very adventurous one, I don't like to sit home when I can be out exploring the great outdoors! Hence why I like to travel a lot.

@pgntwo A vaccine will not solve the problem if it is confirmed that people only develop antibody that last for ONLY 3 months. As we do not have hospital with 100,000 rooms I think that the lockdown is necessary.

It is not easy to plan around something you cannot see nor predict - lockdown is not helping, just trying to buy time until the boffins can make a vaccine. Nasty one, this one.

@pgntwo My brother is a doctor, he was called back to help at the hospital (in Italy) during the worst times of virus. They know nothing at all for the moment, but they have to give hope.

It's too bad about your vacation being cancelled, pgn. I'm sorry that happened. Personally, I don't leave the house except to go to work and to do some quick shopping, when I must. I don't trust people to keep their distance or to wear masks when they go out for anything. (Unless forced, people here won't wear masks and have no concept of social distancing. It makes me mad.) At least Walmart is trying to make people wear masks while in the store. The problem there is that people are allowed to make their own masks out of anything they want to use. *shake my head* And "wear" their "masks" however they choose to wear them.

@pgntwo I wonder if that will protect people from getting the coronavirus from him? Or any disease at all? I saw a teenager in Walmart wearing a mask like that only he pulled it on over his clothes.

@pgntwo We’re going to Portmuck on the 12th just in case the men decide to parade to the Field after all. The Field is a quarter of a mile from our house and we normally take refuge in Manchester but Portmuck’ll have to do this year. Anyway the 12th is on the 13th this year. Have also postponed a jaunt to Sicily.

Portmuck, very relaxing, with its "No Tents" policy. Need to look at a wetsuit for the die-hard swimmer, though. Birthday-suit notwithstanding, of course.

@pgntwo No need for a wet suit early in the morning - no-one about, they’ll all be at the field.

We were supposed to go to China in May (2020) but it was postponed till May 2021. We're now not going at all and hope our travel insurance will come good with a payout. We'll confine ourselves to West Australia for the moment and maybe venture across the border at a later date.

Yes, not great in bits of Australia either, a further 6-week lockdown in the state of Victoria.

@pgntwo Melbourne is having a terrible time of it. They've closed all the borders there which is a nightmare in itself and also locked down various sections. It's just about out of control there.
