This book was written in 1948 and it reflects working conditions of that time. This was the time in history when men had to stand outside in order to be picked for a job. At the start of the story there are hundreds of men who are actually queueing up to try to get a job on board a boat. There are only seven jobs available and the story is about the men who are lucky enough to get the jobs on board the boat.
The men who get the jobs think they are lucky to get work and they are about to go on a very long journey which means they will be able to earn money for several months to come. However, many of their families are not so sure it is a good thing because nobody is allowed to know where the boat is actually going, or what cargo it is supposed to be carrying.

I remember times like that when several men would stand outside and wait to see if they would be picked for a job. This situation does not sound very good. I wonder if they will be spies that no one is suppose to know where the boat is going and what cargo is on it. That does sound scary too. I wonder when the men will find out what is going on and hope they will not be trapped on the boat and cannot get home to their families.

Was the book written in 1948 or is it a recent one based on a story in 1948?? Sounds like a nice story and seems that landing into a good job has always been challenging even in old times.

This was actually written in 1948 and I think my book may be a first edition.
It does show how hard it was to find work in those days, just as competitive as it is now.

The investors form a company for this reason. They are not liable for the loss of the ship.

Many ship companies would have lost money on ships unless they were very well insured.

It seemed like the men were looking forward to going on the voyage although they did not know where they were going.
