What does it mean..."You can't teach an old dog new tricks?"

What are your input on this subject because as far as I know, a person can teach his or her pet dog how to sit, move, fetch, and other tricks..so what does this really mean?

It means a person does not want to change his or her bad ways.

Thank you for the explanation. It's true that no one can change a person's behavior except for that person him/her self. I'm hoping that when a person approaches me and tells me that I am behaving badly, that I won't get offended but instead look at the positive side of that comment and improve myself.
