I Like A Shrink Who I Feel Has Good, Common Sense

I've had mental illness in the form of bipolar disorder and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder for a long time. And during that time, I've worked with lots of therapists and psychiatrists, some who I liked working with better than others.
When I work with a shrink, I like a counselor or psychiatrist who I feel has good common sense.
Of course, to say that a provider has good common sense or not is a matter of opinion.
However, I feel that just because a shrink is real smart, is highly trained, and has a lot of experience working in the mental health field, doesn't necessarily mean that he or she has a lot of good common sense.
I don't feel that shrinks who tell you just to move on from past trauma have good, common sense. It's not that simple.

I agree with you, Belle.
What's a trauma survivor supposed to do, just kick himself or herself in the butt and move on?!

@BelleStarr Actually, I did find a therapist years ago who was the right fit for me. She helped me a lot.
It's been years since I've been in therapy. However, I still see a psychiatrist for medication management purposes.

@MainerMikeBrown They don't shrink heads so it's not accurate and it's pejorative. Would you like to be called a 'nut case'?

What's wrong with calling therapists 'shrinks?'

It is the same with other doctors as well. I really miss the one I had in my old town. I am glad that at least sometimes you found one that was good.

To get over a trauma is never simple and I would want a shrink with a great commons sense too. Common sense seems to be rare these days.

When I went into therapy I lucked out with my psychiatrist--we connected immediately and to this day--44 years later--I remember all he taught me and helped me with!

Some are not very sensitive despite their credentials. There is a person I saw virtually who sucked, I am not paying the tab as I was quite dissatisfied with her service.

Some shrinks/counsellors that I have had I have really liked, as they seemed more "down to earth", and others--not so much due to their crummy attitudes.

It is not that simple because what happened might stay with you for the rest of your life.

I agree with you, a person can have all the degrees in the world, experience but if they don't have common sense those things really don't matter. That goes with anybody, not just in the mental health field.

I think good common sense is important to understand the patient better.
