Have you ever seen an owl? Have you ever seen a barred owl? Have you ever heard a juvenile barred owl?
I have seen a variety of owls and hear them in my woods, but don’t know one from the other.
Two weeks ago our son and his girlfriend left my house and drove into his driveway. He thought he saw a chicken on his back lawn. There are no chickens in our town. It flew up into a tree and began screeching. My son knows his owls and knew a barred owl doesn’t screech.
Thank goodness for Google. They soon found out that it was a juvenile barred owl. They screech. When they grow to adulthood they hoot. They are then called hoot owls/barred owls. Those I hear all the time.
I had the pleasure of hearing this adorable juvenile barred owl screech to its friend when I was at my son’s house Sunday night. My husband also saw them fly away to hunt for food.
I’m amazed with nature here, and so grateful to our son for always clueing us in.

Great photo! I love to see owls. I have only once seen an owl asleep in its tree in the day time. Usually just catch a glimpse when they fly through the yard in evening or early morning.
In winter, I see my gorgeous snowy owls everyday as they hunt in the day.

@amitkokiladitya They are hear, too, but not as common as in India. We don't see them in the wild - at least not here.

One night hubby and I walked under a tree in our old city and an owl, not sure what kind, decided to hoot at us. It was startling. I bet he was looking for something under a street light. I like Barn Owls. I knew a little kid who called them his Heart Owl, because it has a heart shape on its face.

I can't recall seeing any owls, think of it I don't recall hearing any either. Thanks for sharing, the post and the photo.

I haven't heard an owl in a while, we don't have too many birds in this neighborhood.

I LOVE owls and have an owl collection. We hear them hooting from time to time at night; but I've never seen one. Great picture. Have a great day.

Interesting thing, isn’t it....the screech owl doesn’t screech. I got to see a couple up close when the wildlife conservation officer was at the Sport, Boat, and Vacation Show a few years ago.
I like the t-shirt with the annoyed bird saying “go away” (or the less appealing “f—- off“) captioned, “Irritable Owl Syndrome.”

I haven't actually seen an owl up close and certainly didn't know about barred owls. I'm sure we have owls here in the woods but I wouldn't know one from the other either.
Certainly a new and different experience for you to see and hear this owl up close.
