My main mission for now is to teach my eldest son to write essays and my daughter to read. My eldest son enjoys reading. I don't know how he picked up reading, he just started to read on his own. Perhaps by asking me some questions here and there sometimes when I was busy taking care of my youngest. I have been finding ways to encourage him to write. Finally, now he started to enjoy writing more, though there are still mistakes here and there, those can be corrected soon. I am happy that he finally developed the habit of writing. My another big challenge is to teach my daughter to read. I have been finding ways to teach her read. Finally I have found some beginner readers that she is interested in, and I think I'll just let her keep practicing. Hopefully by more practice, she'll get to learn phonics, recognize the words, and later she can read a book on her own. So now I have to prepare daily writing and reading practice for both of them. Do you remember how you learned to read and write? (I don't. ) Photo credit: Pixabay

I think it's good to start with reading lots of story books. It also cultivates the interest for the kids to read and write as well.

Good that you still remember. I just remember we had a reading session in kindergarten, and we just read books on our own in the small "library room". I don't remember how I started to learn how to read. I didn't know about phonics, sight words, word families until I started to teach my kids.

@kaka135 I had the first reading sessions in kindergarten, but we started to write only at the elementary schools. I remember those books with an image and a letter to start reading, the drawing of a house and the letter H, may be I still have one.

Thanks! I always remind myself what Dory said, "just keep swimming, just keep swimming..." and I'll just keep learning.

I am also finding a lot of stuff for encouraging my kid to read and write. In comparison to previous now she is ok, small words, simple sentences now she read.

How old is your daughter now? I believe they will eventually pick up reading when they have interest in it. I suppose they gain confidence when they can read too.

Thanks! Yes, it can be quite fun though challenging sometimes. I like that the older child can teach the younger sibling as well.

My son also learned to read by himself when he was 4. My daughter learned in school and I think I did too.

Thanks! I just keep learning and finding ways to do so. I am grateful there is Internet and we can find lots of resources online now.
