Could Not Believe What I Found

For the past few days I have noticed a mourning dove going to the top of a pine tree in my backyard. Then she flies to the bottom of the cypress trees. Back and forth.
Finally today I saw twigs in her mouth. She is building a nest in September. Wow!
I researched and read they can have as many as six nests a year and can be late nesters, into the fall. I had no idea they did this.
By the way, I only see one dove. And the males and females look alike, so I am not sure which one is building the nest.
This photo is as close as I could get to the nest. It is about 20 feet up in the pine tree. I will keep you updated. Crazy bird lady is happy again.

@kareng I had not either until we moved here, they were planted in the yard already. The trunks are fairly smooth for a pine but sill rough. Funny, the trucks are rougher than the limbs. And the straw on the tree is sort of feathery.

Oh they are such cool birds and their sounds is amazing. I hope you can see one of these one day.
A graceful, slender-tailed, small-headed dove that’s common across the continent. Mourning Doves perch on telephone wires and forage for seeds on the ground; their flight is fast and bullet straight. Their soft, drawn-out calls sound like laments. When tak

Wouldn't it be easier if they just used the same nest over and over again instead of building six nests every year? LOL
I know you're excited to have a bird nesting again in your yard!

Many birds do re-use their nests. Others do not. I am excited. Many birds are just designed to build nests as part of the breeding process. Plus some nests are not durable enough to last for more than one season and in such situations, a new nest has to be built anyway.

We have mourning doves around here. As cold as our weather gets, I'll bet they relocate to Tennessee!

wow a late nesting bird. Hope you will keep us posted. Our Canadian geese have already started traveling down south but I just hope they will not have any hardships with all the wildfires in the US right now. Cannot wait to see your updates....

@CarolDM Great but the Canadian geese go further south if I know them well. Still you just might witness their V formation in the sky and hear their distinct cackles.
