Do you have a fish pond?

Fish Pond - Koi and Gold fish in the pond

We have 2 fish ponds in the back yard we built ourselves. We have Koi and Gold fish in both. How hard is it to keep yours clean? What chemicals do you use to keep it clean and are safe for the fish? We find they require a great deal of work depending on the season. What is your experience?

I assume you are not in the position to have one at the moment? Why would that be? I do enjoy ours so much, even with the hard work keeping them clean.

why yes I have a fish pond its about 5 acres. Natural pond though no chemicals, we dug it ourselves, we have stacked bass and brim in it. Ours I guess is not a pretty in your back yard, ours was built for fishing. You should come some time!!

Okay that's not a fish pond, that's a lake. The only fishing done in our pond is when the Blue Herron decided he wanted koi that day for breakfast, lunch and dinner. He ate all $300,000 worth of fish that day. But my husband having never seen such a big beautiful bird changes his mind about Blue Herrons. He hates those birds now.

I'm glad he is swimming with friends. It would be sad to swim alone. What made the fish dye? Why didn't you get more?

Why don't you have one? They are easy to set up. You can buy them preformed and everything. They are peaceful too.

As long as your filter is large enough then there should not be a problem with algae providing that you have enough floating plants such as water lilies, lotus or even water lettuce or water hyacinths to keep too much sun from getting in and letting the algae take over. Also make sure to not overfeed your fish because this will help the algae also.

I do not have a koi pond at this moment. I had a pond years ago, and I loved it. It wasn't deep enough to keep the fish in year round So I had bring them in during the winter. They were easy to take care of all winter, I hadthem in my garage and they were cold enough that they did not eat all winter. How are your fish doing?

we have three ponds. 2 are the hard ready made ones fromwalmart, with waterfalls, and one is a big rubber horse feeder dish. it fit perfectly under our little wishing well. we have loads of pretty plants around it and there have been 2 gold fish init for abotu 4 years. there is also a bull frog in there, but he is very elusive. our other pondwhich is near that one has a few feeder gold fish,2 crawdads, and a couple frogs. the other one has a couple feeder goldies in it. all of the ponds are now self supporting. we dont have ot feed the critters and fish and we dont clean it,save once a year each spring we pull out some of the mud that has accumulated in the bottom. they are all healthy ponds, which we can tell by the growth of the fish and the shedding of the crawdads, who molt alot!

My most clear ponds were the ones under the Black walnut trees. I've discovered that the shade from the trees and the dye from the walnuts or their leaves kept the "pea soup" look to a minimum. Supposedly black walnuts are poisonous to fish, but I haven't lost a koi yet. My pond now, with no shade, is constantly pea soup. It's a battle. I won't see my fish until it snows when I bring them inside for the winter.

Hi, I am new here and this is my first response. We have had three ponds in the past 10 years or so, filled with Koi and goldfish. Our first house we dug out two 9 by 12 ponds and had a stream running between them. They were in our backyard under black walnut trees, what a mess. Our most recent pond is smaller, maybe 8 by 10 and a small stream that runs from the filter to the pond. Here there is no shade, and I am having alot of trouble with algae.
