Putting our best foot forward

We’re home from our holiday but only for a few days. Then we go to the last horse endurance ride of the season. On our way home today, we helped my nephew with his goats at a goat show. In the photo, I am leading a Nigerian Dwarf goat called Stitch. This breed gives a surprising amount of milk for their size. The mil is very rich in butterfat so it’s popular with cheese-makers. My nephew took five milking goats, six young goats and a buck to the show and did very well with them. The milking goats were judged with a full udder, then they were milked before being judged again. The five goats were all in the one class so Vince had to lead one. He is now telling everyone he got a third in the ‘best udder’ class.

@JudyEv that't does fer certain. hard to come by 'round these parts'n when ya do 'tis very spendy, too. used to use such'n my 'luxury bars'. 've ne'er made cheese, though've been thinkin' to do so. prolly ought'a try dairy free (made with cashews) versus the goats milk, but who knows? such might jest like my gut jest fine. a gal can dream anyhow, eh? wholy flyin' cowpatties! that'd be a whole lot'ta milk fer certain. bless her, bet she 'twas so relieved 'fter, lol. one'd need a houseful 'f young'uns to drink that much. 'r the hubs'n my youngest son. 'twixt the 2 we'd go through 'bout 6 gallons 'f milk per week.

The Nigerians don't give quite so much milk but it's very rich. Ideal for cheese and soap. Trevor's big Saanen gave nearly four litres at the show which is nearly too much for most households.

@crazyhorseladycx With the goats having 2, 3 and 4 babies each, milk is at a premium at the moment but later they hope to try making some cheese.

Be careful what you wish for! They are adorable but difficult to keep contained and they chew everything they can get hold of - programmes, prize ribbons, coats. When we were feeding the babies, they were forever undoing our shoe-laces.

@Ronrybs One of the endurance riders had to hog (cut short) her horse's mane because the goats had chewed it. lol

I might be a little confused, but were the nannies judged on their udders?

A 'good' goat needs to have a good udder among other things but there was also a class 'Best Udder' so for that class, the goat was judged solely on its udder.

@DianneN You should start a new trend and get a miniature goat.

The little goats are so cute. One tiny quad was just 680 grams at birth but she is now twice that and bouncing all over the place. They aren't normally quite that small.

You and Stitich look so happy with each other's company. If I am not wrong, you had mentioned about Stitch earlier too in some of your post ( I remember it vaguely). And Vince has a great sense of wit

I probably have mentioned Stitch before as she was a favourite too even as a baby. Vince has a new item to add to his CV now!

@JudyEv You two are jet setters. That is cool that there is a goat show. It looks you and Stitch are bonding with each other.

We enjoyed the day. Luckily we had the shade of a big tree to stand and be judged with a little walk in the sun. It was quite hot by the end of the day.

I have never been that near to goats like you in the picture Judy. I have seen them only at a zoo! You look so cute in the picture.

Haha - no, there is no Lilo but there is a line of goats with 'sweet' names - TimTam, Jaffa, KitKat, Jube, etc.

That goat in the photo is very cute, usually in each country the goat had difference type, is it a type of mountain goat?

I think the Nigerian Dwarf originated in Nigeria but I don't think they are mountain goats. And yes, they are very cute.
