Will we ever be a paperless society?

The photo has nothing to do with the discussion. It’s one of the flowering shrubs in the Kalbarri area of Western Australia. The flower stalks grow well above the shrub itself. What I wanted to say was: Despite the cleverness and convenience of computers and mobile phones, they do have limitations. When such technology first came into being, all the talk was about the ‘paperless office’ but it seems to me that there is a still a lot of paper out there. As myLotter Lori A. Moore (@LoriAMoore) pointed out some time back https://www.mylot.com/post/3393492/does-technology-replace-paper¬), we still need toilet paper. In our household, we use computers for many things but I’m finding that you really need to keep paper copies of some documents too. If the internet goes down, or the power goes off, then having vital stuff only on your computer can be very inconvenient. We might look up directions to get to a place and Vince will say ‘I can look it up on the phone’. When we get near the place, we might have no reception. Have you been caught out by relying too much on your computer or mobile?

I had fun doing calculations last night (watching Biden overtake Orange Man) with paper and pencil. I don't like to be dependent on technology. I just took a nice poop and wiped my butt virtually. What's that smell? Nope. I'm heading back in to finish the job.

I work in the government and the hard copies with signatures are very important. I am scared of online money transactions because of hackers. But I think they may be secure.

The problem is, if something goes wrong, there is no backup. For instance, anything stored on floppy discs is inaccessible nowadays.

At times, it is so. If some day, Internet connectivity is slow, I find not much to do in certain areas. Some people are even more addicted to Internet and the phones. They keep on checking social media quite too much.

Yes, some people are never off their phones. They would be completely lost without them.

It's just going to be a case to case basjs. Routinary internal files need not be printed but those communication requiring proof of receipts must be printed.

A paperless society would be ideal but I doubt if it truly happens. We are relying too much on technology, that is a fact.

The nice example of drawing flak due to relying too much on technology or paperless working is banks. Many a time we experience that their working is at standstill because there is no internet or no power. Then we are constrained to believe how nice it was when everything was managed through books.

I don't travel as much as you do so I haven't had the necessity to use tech to get where I'm going, I already know how to get where I need to be.

Unfortunately not for my country. A lot of the retailers in my country will still prefer to have cash transaction especially when it is those smaller retailers.

Even with other documentation, sometimes you need hard copies rather than just online documents.

I don't think it's possible. I think there's a lot of places where we can and should reduce paper, but I think "virtual legal documents" won't ever be admissible in court. But what do I know. And yes, while I do rely on my phone's navigation app, I also have maps in the car!!!
