A gaol cell of the 1800s

While visiting Busselton in Western Australia, we toured the old courthouse and gaol which is now a museum. There are descriptive panels in several places and I was intrigued by one which hung in one of the tiny gaol cells. The cells, which appeared to be roughly 3 metres x 2 metres, were made of limestone blocks, which are relatively soft. After a prisoner called John Williams escaped in 1862 from one of these cells, by picking out the mortar and stones from the wall, then pulling the small window frame inwards, the cells were lined with mahogany. Williams was recaptured but escaped again and police caught him the second time while he was in the act of making himself a pair of trousers out of a blanket. During the scuffle, Williams stole the constable’s revolver. Two days later, he was seen with the revolver in his hand but with no trousers! Don’t you just love stories like this?

@judyev If he had no trousers on I wonder if it was really a revolver he had in his hand? Oh naughty me.

Yes, indeed. Naughty you!! I guess, in those days, if you were on the run and there were no trousers around, you just had to go without.

Yes, those are definitely interesting kinds of stories. But if he wasn't wearing any pants then where did he put that revolver?

When I lived in Oakham, in Rutland England's smallest county, there was a Goal St, which I was guess was the site of the old jail, but that is long gone. Have to say that cell looks pretty secure and well built

Lined with wood, they'd be more secure. They were tiny though. Aboriginal prisoners were together in a separate cell chained to a ring in the wall. Very inhumane.

That's one weird story. Maybe in those days having no trousers on was not really weird. Otherwise he was already being found much earlier.

The country then was virtually uninhabited so there was nowhere to buy trousers. He'd have had to make some or steal some.

Gee from reading the story I thought the hardest part would have been the escape not locating some trousers?

I don't know how he came to lose his trousers. Perhaps they took them off him to put him off trying to escape. If that was the case, then it didn't work, did it?
