Children-tossing

This drawing was put on the gate of an elementary school in Avignon with a text telling : "DON'T TOSS YOUR CHILDREN ABOVE THE GATE" "If I am late and the gate is closed, I come back with my children at 10am or 3pm." I have some indulgence for these parents tossing their children. Education is very important for children, they should never miss school. It is not like if the parents wanted to get rid of them or were exercising for dwarf-tossing. What do you think ?

@jstory07 I have not seen the gates, they are often no more than 4 or 5 feet high around elementary schools, it is probably not very dangerous, but an accident can always happen.

"Tossing" would not be a good idea, "dropping" if the gate is not too high... why not?

That's a hilarious picture! But yes there have been times when I have considered whether I could lift one of mine over the fence. The caretaker used to take a malicious pleasure in locking the gate when he saw us rushing towards it - sometimes even a minute or two early - and then we would have to walk an extra couple of hundred metres round to the office, which of course made us even later, and then she would have to walk all the way back across the playing field to her class. making her later still. He just did it on purpose.

It was not fair. I have always tried to be in good terms with the "little staff", any basic worker can find a way to bug people...

@topffer I don't know why he seemed to take against me. It was a bit awkward when I turned up to help out with various school tasks and he had to be nice to me!

I think it depends how high is the gate and how turbulent is the child

There were no gates closed doors yes. Every time I had to take my eldest to the school and I was a bit late just a few minutes I had the teacher glaring at me with her cairngorm goats beady eye eyeing me up and down. She asks me if I think that this is Buckingham Palace? I did not answer her for I was long suffering and I did not want to lose my job or the chance to have my eldest at School. What she did not know was the hour Monday to Friday at half past five I was up in the coldest of winter weather to first of all make coffee and clean up the kitchen in the Hotel where we worked Then at eight and something in the morning I had to run from the Hotel back to where we lived and then try and get Mr. sleepy head number one up no mean feat I can tell you and then go straight back to the Hotel to clean 21 rooms top to bottom and the bathrooms which makes 42 rooms. So I did not need closed gates to toss my kid over there Mrs. Cairngorm goats eye was always watching and waiting like a vulture. Que tengas un buen día tops.

@topffer You know how goats eye people up and down like they are going to go for you well she has a cairngorm goat´s eye two of them when she was glaring at me. This ia goat from the Cairngorms although the Cairngorms have much bigger beady eyes If she knew how hard I was working well over a10 hour day only to have to listen to her whinging and whining well it was a bit too much sometimes. The coffee I had to make it all by myself and take it to the rooms which were mostly salesmen I knew how to defend myself though.

@lovinangelsinstead21 A goat full of hair I like the look of Scottish cows, but I had never seen the goats. A goat is a very difficult animal, they are very picky. Difficult to believe, but the powder milk given to baby goats has some vanilla in it !

Lol to "cairngorm goats beady eye" Not many people are voluntarily late. Some teachers are stupid, it is difficult to not slap them

I guess there is no one on the other side to child-catch . I would actually be quite impressed if a parent could toss their child over one of our tall school fences. And even more impressed if a child can stick the landing . . . many kids don't seem as agile as we were in our time . But here's a thought. Get kids to school on time. What a concept !

@topffer One day it may become an Olympic sport . Our fences here are much taller than that . . . I don't know exactly but much taller than even a tall adult. I've only seen children-shoving (through the school office doors!).

@much2say I don't think we have created any Olympic sport, they cannot refuse this one High schools have very high walls, those from the 19th C are looking a bit like barracks. We trust children but not teens. During my last year of high school I spent most of my math classes in a café with two friends. None of us became a math teacher, but one is teaching philosophy

No, but it gives me an idea for a new game based on volley-ball, volley-child The gates of elementary schools are usually not very high in France, 4 or 5 feet, and it is the first time that I read about "children-tossing", but I am quite sure it is done elsewhere

Hmmm... if the bars were not too close together, maybe shove the child through... after all, the parent needs some time away from the child, right? Why would a gate at a school be locked if school is in session? You KNOW someone threw their kid over the fence or that sign wouldn't have been posted!

I am sure that many people did it. I have not seen this school, but many elementary schools have fences which are only 4 or 5 feet high, so dropping a child is not that dangerous. Tossing... well, when you are in a hurry and already late... Gates are closed because of the risk of terrorism (I know that they may jump above these gates easily, but they don't even think at it. Parking a car near a school is also forbidden because a bomb could be in the car. And our terrorists don't even try to do it because of the sign forbiding parking. Our regulations are really made by clever people and our terrorists are really stupid.)

@topffer I know there were times when Pretty was still little that I "might" have considered tossing her over a fence... maybe not to school, but any fence, as long as she couldn't keep pestering me.

It is because I found it funny that I decided to share here. The fences of primary schools are usually only 4 or 5 feet high, I think the drawing exaggerates a bit.

The parent may or may not have reasons to be late. But the price should not be paid by the child. The school gotta penalize the parent for bringing in child late. The gate will open on payment of a minor penalty. This will ensure that parents do not get late and also have valid excuse whenever they are. Tossing child is risky for the child.

It is rare but parents may be penalized if their children do not go to school by not giving them children allowance (it is given automatically to parents having 2 or more children).

I love these bizarre signs and saw quite a few. " Do not get your leg over the wall" was one example. I guess if you have been locked up with your kids at home for a while it is one way of getting them off your hands for a bit!

The schools are opened to permit to parents to go to work. And they cannot bring their children at work... I have not seen a photo of the gate, but they are usually not very high in elementary schools. "Do not get your legs over the wall"... By experience if you tell "Don't do this" here, it will be an incentive to do it. In a city having several roman ruins, the only way we found to not have children climbing on the walls and dogs peeing on them, was to put a symbolic 1 euro fee to enter...
