My oldest daughter and I are both avid readers. We tend to like the same books and trade them often. There's a book we've both wanted to read so I got it for her for Christmas. It came today! Now that I have the book I'm so tempted to read it first but that wouldn't be right even though she probably wouldn't know. Most of my books you would never know have been read. So my decision is this... Give it to her and wait for her to read it and then give it to me. Read it first, then give it to her and get her something else Guess if that's my biggest decision today life isn't too bad

I would be tempted too. I think i would give it to her and wait for her to give it to me to read. I would be waiting to get it with bated breath though.

I already put it out of sight so I don't give into temptation and will wait until she reads it first

Maybe buy yourself another one to read while you wait?

I would give it to her unread - you'll have plenty of time to read it when she's done with it.

I know it's tempting, but you did buy it for her for Christmas.

I think that you should not read the book first. Here is an example, from my own life: Once, long ago, I bought my mother a radio for Christmas. I liked the look of it so much, that I went back to the store, and I bought another one for myself too. There was only one left now, and it was the display one, but a box was still available, but it did not look so new. I was greedy, mean, and I kept the first one for myself, and I gave my mother this second one now. When she opened it, and tried to use it, it never worked. I had not checked it either. I got it repaired. It worked then, but it never worked as well as it should have. I regretted being so mean, and not giving her the first one, that I had bought for her. I feel we should always give the gift, fresh then, and unused, as the energy of use stays in the item, and the user can always tell this, in some subtle way.

That's very good advice and I'm sorry that you had a hard lesson with the radio for your mom. I am going to give my daughter the book first and will wait patiently until she reads it after Christmas

@Marilynda1225 That lesson, has stayed with me all of my life since. So, in a way, it was a good lesson, as I have never done that again. Yes, that is what I would do too. Once, she has read it, she will be thrilled when you then read it then too, and you can discuss parts of it together then too.

So you kind of bought yourself a Christmas present this way . I say wait and let her read it first. My husband is currently reading a book about Labrador retrievers and I am reading one about an autistic savant.

If she would really like I would give it to her, and then you can read it afterwards. What book is it out of curiousity? I am reading one by Mindy Kaling..which is really pretty funny. She has a great self deprecating humor.

It's the latest book in the Stephanie Plum series called Fortune and Glory by Janet Evanovich. My daughter and I have been reading this series since book #1

No one would guess that my books have been read, I think she would not mind if you read it first.

I think it is fine to read them first. Or, do the other way around.

I would be tempted too. You could always ask for the book for Christmas as one if your gifts.

Both decisions are fine as this is between mother and daughter and love trumps anyway.
