Banjos and bad jokes

We travelled to the city a week or two ago to attend a concert our niece was playing in. There are very few restrictions here now so it was nice to be able to attend a live performance.
There was a buzz of conversation in the foyer before the performance. We were talking to our niece but it was a bit hard to hear with all the background noise going on. She said something about she hoped their leader wouldn’t play his banjo. This reminded us of a couple of riddles about the banjo. What’s the range of a banjo? It depends how hard you throw it. And what’s the difference between a banjo and a trampoline? You take your shoes off before jumping on a trampoline.
Back at her parent’s house after the concert, I asked why the guy hadn’t played his banjo. She looked very puzzled and said she’d never mentioned a banjo. A few minutes later, the light dawned for her. What she had actually said was: She hoped he didn’t tell any of his bad jokes! We’d mistaken ‘bad jokes’ for ‘banjo’. We are certainly getting more and more hard of hearing.
Excuse me while I go and have a quiet weep.
Photo of a musician’s set of instruments. He and a mate gave a concert in our lounge once.

@JudyEv yes ma'am, most fortunate fer certain. we'd not be'n the 'pickle' we've been'n if'n our elected officials would'a grew a pair, worked together'n done the same. so many lives destroyed out'ta pettiness.

We are just so fortunate. Even the borders to the east are open now which might bring more challenges. We do have to sign our name at every place we go (or use an app on our phone if it works). This is to enable the authorities to trace those who might be at risk if they've come in contact with an infected person. Other than that we're pretty much free to come and go as we like.

I tried it too and you're right. Maybe we rely on lip-reading more than we think.

The mandolin is so embarrassed to be pictured next to the banjo that it turned its back!
Charlie Louvin told me one: what do you call 100 banjos at the bottom of the Mississippi River? Good for a start.
The poor maligned banjo.
And losing one's hearing isn't bad: you didn't have to hear the bad jokes. Or the banjos.

We've been to two concerts lately and are looking forward to the International Summer Film Festival in January. I can't believe how lucky we are compared to many countries.

Funny jokes. Don't worry about the mistake. It's easy to confuse bad joke for banjo. I'm sure you're hearing is fine!

@JudyEv I'm sorry to hear that. At least you admit your difficulty. My father-in-law needed a hearing aid but kept saying he had water in his ears. :-(

I like most instruments - even bagpipes - if they're about three mile away.
