Music (and dance) are probably one of the most elemental and direct ways of expressing emotion, so it is entirely natural that what music one chooses to sing or listen to at any particular time should be a deep expression of our need to express what is our most fervent emotion at the time. Sometimes what we choose may express what we are actually feeling and sometimes it may be something that we want to or feel we need to feel, as when we may choose to listen to some uplifting music when we are downhearted or may find ourselves singing a sad song when we are actually euphoric.
