This is the story of two very troubled teenagers growing up together. Marianne has a rich widowed mother and an older brother. Her late father was a bully , and his treatment of his family has affected them badly. Connell comes from a poor background with a single mother who works as a domestic in Marianne`s mothers house. The two teenagers are the same age and they are in the same year at school, but this is all they seem to have in common. So when Connell arrives at Mariannes` home to pick his mother up from work, a conversation between them sparks off a strange series of events. Over the next few years they seem to come in and out of each others lives , with mutual friends and jobs etc. Their friendship is very much affected by the reactions of their peers at the time.

@arunima25 I just watched it as a weekly series on BBC one earlier this year. Maybe you could buy a box set of the series.

I enjoyed reading the book and it has recently been made into a television series.

Do you think that young people who have feelings for each other cannot be friends if either of them do not want a romantic relationship?
