National Animal of your country?

The other day I was scrolling through the feed and came across a discussion about the national sport of your countries. Inspired from that topic, I decided to open one about the national animals of your countries. What's your country's national animal? Maybe in some countries there is more than one national animal. Here in North Macedonia, the Lion is our national animal.

@mrki444 It's a story that dates back centuries ago since ancient Macedonia. Lions used to live on the territory of Macedonia, which is supported by ancient historians and fossils sightings from the surrounding of Delcevo (a city in present day Macedonia). It is also believed that the ancient Macedonians used to hunt lions and as a result, large number of mosaics and paintings that portrayed lion huntings were discovered. The lion as well as the Macedonian star from Kutles, is another symbol of the Macedonian people, culture and tradition.

Nice, that's why I opened this topic. Besides the majority of fellow Americans here that have the Bald Eagle as their national animal, it's nice to see a different variety of animals from different countries.

We share the same national animal then, that's cool. I think the Lion being a national animal of many countries in the world today, it probably must have a biblical meaning.

@eshtreef I do not know if it is the national animal of the country. I know for a fact that The Lion is very important to us in Jerusalem.

The bearers on our Royal coat of arms are the Lion and the Unicorn. I think that Britain has always been associated with the Lion (not so much the Unicorn!). However, we are also rather proud of our stubbornness and fighting ability which is why the Bulldog has been used as a symbol in the past. Heraldic beasts aside, if I were to choose an animal which represents Great Britain, I would have some difficulty. Although we are an island nation, we don't really have any significant animal which is unique to these islands. Perhaps I would choose either the Hedgehog or the Red Squirrel. The Hedgehog for its persistence and its ability to defend itself with its prickles and the Red Squirrel for its ability to store up food for the winter, perhaps. What would you choose as a native animal for Macedonia?

Yey the Owl of myLot commented on my discussion, I somehow feel honored. Are you one of the cofounders of this site? If it wasn't in the site's design to show when an user has registered, I would've never known myLot existed 15 years ago, wow!. Back on topic tho, interesting question, it got me thinking I must say. If I had to choose the national animal of my country, I probably would not have changed it, the lion fits just perfectly, but for the sake of the question, I'll say I'd either pick the common Nightingale bird or the Lynx because it is on the verge of extinction in my country, and has been declared officially an endangered species.

Well, as many others have said, the Bald Eagle is known as America's "animal" or bird. Though my teen daughter and I recently decided that it really should be the seagull, as we are a nation that is loud, obnoxious, we want everything, and we constantly want to eat. I stand corrected by my husband and the interwebz. Our national bird is the Bald Eagle but our national animal is the Bison!

Haha, I like this unique answer a lot! I think that you should listen to your teen daughter and stick with the seagull, regardless of what other people say or what is officially written in the constitution or wherever USA has written the national animal law.

@eshtreef I think that is true, but I've seen documentaries where they are doing well now. I hope it stays that way.

Nice, sucks that there are no bald eagles here in Europe, at least not in Macedonia. Also, I've read somewhere that bald eagle sightings used to be very rare as they once were on the verge of extinction, but fortunately that's no longer the case and now they can be seen commonly in the US, is that true?
