We've made our friend a gift

In about an hour, we’re off to Perth, Western Australia. Tomorrow we’re attending a 70th birthday lunch for a very good friend. We have made her a wooden box which you can see in the photo. It’s lined with blue velvet and is made of jarrah, a red hardwood indigenous to Australia.
It takes us a long time to make something like this. We had to glue two pieces of wood together to get pieces big enough for the bottom and lid. The piece was then put through a thicknesser over and over till it was the thickness we wanted.
The four sides were glued together then glued to the base. It took overnight for each gluing to bond properly. Then the whole thing was sanded with four different grades of sandpaper.
The hinges had to be attached very exactly then removed while four coats of varnish were applied, each with a light sanding in between. The velvet was glued into place, the hinges replaced and four little clear plastic ‘buttons, placed on the base to prevent it scratching whatever surface on which it might be placed. After all that work, she’d better like it!! (That’s a joke)

That is a lovely gift! I'm really impressed! You mean you made it by yourself? You didn't use metal nails to do it?

Well, really Vince made it but he needed my help with parts of it. It is glued together so didn't need nails.

I'm sure she will love it, Judy!
It is a very nice looking box. It sounds like you and Vince went to quite a bit of trouble to make it for her.

@DaddyEvil Yes, I guess that's true. We might make her give it back so we can put some little chains on it to stop the lid falling right back. We didn't have time first time around.

that is a nice gift but where is your friend going to this huge box?

The box isn't big at all. Only about 8 inches long, perhaps 5" wide and 1 1/2" deep. Perhaps she'll use it for some of her jewellery.

Thanks. We were pleased with the end result. There was a fair bit of sanding to get it all fitting nicely.

@crazyhorseladycx Are you allowed to take timber into the US? To bring wooden items into Australia, it usually has to be fumigated or somesuch.

@arunima25 I can understand. There is a lot that goes on here that I don't comprehend, mostly in the area of finances.

@JudyEv It would be a pleasure to work with that. My husband enjoys carpentry and he takes different kinds of wood for different things. I am not much aware of these things. I know little as we live in same house.
