In Croatia we had several earthquakes and many people needed help. People from rest of country and from world collect help in food, clothes, money. Donations were transfered into affected area and we are very grateful for it. Especially for help from other countries.
But there is bad side of it.
Many people try use this help even they don't need it. Here is example.
I saw and I ad for Audi 2010 car. That car is premium model in Croatia. Not cheap, expensive for maintaince. But in comments for car, people recognize a couple, who was on TV begging for help and people brought them everything including money. That couple was asking about price and equipment of car.
So they lost everything and three weeks later they can buy premium model of car? Now people attact them to return back part of help. If they were bid for some cheap model it would be ok but buy very expensive model is just not right.

@mrki444 This also happened in Germany many years ago. It was a big scandal.
Maybe it's best to help on a low local level and not a big organisation. For example, send things to the priest of a village who can distribute things. Something like that.

I remember a family here who used their young son to get donations and help. Turned out the son recovered nicely long before they stopped begging for help. They wound up with a new mobile home and two new vehicles. They also got into a lot of trouble.

@mrki444 I am not sure exactly how/what happened. But in the end they will spend a long long time paying back a lot of money.

@Namelesss At least something. In my country this couple will not probably return nothing.

There are many horror stories of so called charities around the world that have been called out for stealing the donations from donors.

Sometimes people indeed abuse and take advantage of the generosity of others.

Some will always try to take advantage of someone's kindness and good heartedness. Scammers have made a living preying on the elderly and other's who want to donate to a good cause.
