Why Are Orange Cats Mostly Male?

January 18, 2021 12:12pm CST
Hello everyone! I am new here but I already see some familiar faces. For those who don't know me, I'm Ellie and I love nature, animals, art, cooking, and learning new things. One of my resolutions for the new year is to learn something new every day. I do that anyway but my goal is to actually memorize and retain the new information. Maybe writing about these things here would be a good way to achieve that. For example, an interesting little fact I just read is that orange cats are usually male. The reason for that is the X chromosome which carries either the gene for black or orange fur but not both. Since female cats have two X chromosomes, they need them both to carry the gene for orange for the cat to be orange. On the other hand, a male cat has only one X chromosome and as long as it carries the gene for orange fur, the male cat will be orange. About 81 percent of orange cats are male. That's also the reason why calico tri-color cats are mostly female. Did you enjoy this information about cats? What is something interesting you learned recently?

I am so glad you are here!!!!!!! The question about orange cats is interesting. My guess would be it is an X dominant gene, therefore doesn't pass to females often.

And calico cats are predominately female. I always thought that was a neat fact, too. Something I learned recently? I discovered last week there are regular type of light bulbs that have a tiny lithium battery in them, and when your power goes out, they stay on for 4 hours. I don't know why I didn't know this, but I did. So I ordered a few from Amazon because we do have power outages sometimes.

Yes, they carry one black-gene and one orange-gene chromosome. Such fascinating creatures! That's very interesting, I didn't know about these bulbs either. Thank you for sharing!
