Watch Out There's A Thief About

I was browsing a well known video hosting web site when I came across a video posted by someone who is doing the same online guitar course I'm doing. When he was talking about his comparatively slow progress he used a quote, which he attributed to Theodore Roosevelt, which was "comparison is the thief of joy". I've never come across that quote before but, thinking about the times I've unfairly compared myself to others, I realised how true it was. For instance, comparing my scientific achievements to those of Professor Brian Cox, my engineering achievements to those of Elon Musk, my guitar-playing ability to that of Matt Bellamy and my footballing abilities to those of Lionel Messi is clearly going to remove the joy from any achievements in those fields. So I would just like to say a big sorry to those guys. I didn't mean to make you feel bad.

@WorDazza Maybe now they’ll come out of their shells and blossom now that they won’t be comparing themselves to you.

I sincerely hope so. They've all been guilty of underachievement for far too long.

@WorDazza It was when Hemingway was compared unfavourably to me that he shot himself.

@xFiacre And quite right too. To do anything less would have been a dereliction of duty on his part.

It is perspective. Kinda - I fear singing songs sung by my favorite singers, until and unless somebody else sings it. It is like, if she can, so can I, system. LOL

I forgot about my singing. I tend not to do it in public. I would hate to end the careers of so many of the world's greatest tenors.

@vandana7 Absolutely. Although they should be paying me to keep my mouth shut.

I love this quote and I realize how much this is true. Stop comparing and be happy, this is something I am going to do.

@WorDazza That is also wrong, you make jealous and then they will badmouth just to make you feel bad.

As long as you don't start comparing how happy you are with other people

I think people who do compare themselves to others are not particularly happy people.
