Bird Bath Was Frozen

The bird bath in the backyard has been frozen the last few days. I bundle up and go out to give the birds fresh water each day. I try to always remember to keep my phone in my pocket in case I need the camera. After I got the ice out, and added fresh water, I noticed the blue jays had returned to the deck feeder. Had to walk very slowly back to the deck to get this photo, not to chase them away. They are getting used to me. They should since I feed and water them every day. The sun is shining but it is very cold at 38, and feels like 32 degrees F.

The birds must absolutely love you! It's nice to see green grass once again.

Thanks, the grass is only green in spots, out by the fence is a lot of weeds.

@CarolDM I'll take weeds right now. Not a bit of green to be seen here right now.

@DianneN The neighbor's yard has more green than we do.

They definitely appreciate that fresh water. You must walk very delicately. I am such a clutz that even if I walk like a mouse I'll end up bumping something and startling the critters.

@CarolDM Oh how I love butterflies! I bet that takes a lot of patience too.

Yes they do. I do walk quietly so I can catch these moments. I never know what I will see. I learned when I started photographing butterflies to be quiet.

@ScribbledAdNauseum Yes it does, I sit in the garden usually with my camera and let them get used to me being there.

Those little birds are so lovely. I do the same every day, get the ice out and pour fresh water in the bath.

@CarolDM The blue birds are all pretty. We have chickadees here. They like to eat peanuts.

Thank you! These jays are about twice the size of the bluebirds in the spring. I try to keep fresh water.

@CarolDM I never leave water for the birds over the winter It never occurred to me, probably due to the assumption that there is a lake nearby

It would be so cool to see several Jay's at the birdbath. Mine has no water in but they never use it anyway.

@CarolDM Sometimes it has water...I have never seen a bird near it. We have too many water sources here for them to use it. I have a fountain in it now.

Today is a warmer day for us at 38. I don't know what the'feels like' is and I'm not going outside to check. Although I should go out there to start my car at least once but I forgot I'll be driving it tomorrow evening. That should be good enough. Your birds are beautiful. Do they drink much water in the winter? I would think they wouldn't get into the bird bath then their feathers might freeze or maybe they warm up enough flying. I remember seeing ducks in a pond by the mall when the pounds was half frozen, so maybe it doesn't bother them like it would me.
