Difference Between Cows And Ducks (Animal Story 21)

You may ask, "What else is new?" Everybody knows that cows are mammals and ducks are birds. Well, yes, indeed, but I don't want to enlighten you on this. What I want to tell is is that one species enjoys winter and snow and the other doesn't. You may have read my last post and watched the video on the cow catching snowflakes with its tongue and obviously enjoying this. If you haven't, it's high time you did! Cows are much more robust than you may think if you've never had the opportunity of watching them closely. I used to live in the north of Germany where there are large meadows with mainly cows of the black and white Holstein breed. They remain outside even in winter. The town I lived in lies on the banks of a small river. It is a tributary of a bigger river. Between the tributary and the main river is an island with one farm on it. Once a cow had to be transported by boat from this island to the town, I don't remember why. But I do remember that it so happened that the boat capsized and the cow fell into the water. What did it do? It swam! I didn't know that cows can swim, but later I learnt that obviously all animals can swim if need be. They don't have to learn it like human beings. Whatever. Now watch the video and see what ducks do when they realise that it's cold outside! ---- As fitting background music I recommend Dean Martin's "Baby, It's Cold Outside". https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=crFQpOCDfEc ==== If you're interested in more animal stories, click on the green box above the title.
When it gets cold and you're already over it...🤣

Poor ducks, I know that they hate the snow, also the hens are funny when they go out in the snow and quickly back. I have seen cows swim, also cats swim if they fall in the water, they hate water, but they can swim pretty well.

Tigers even seem to enjoy water.

@MALUSE Tigers seem to love water a lot more than cats. Horses can swim too, but not for a long time.

@LadyDuck @MALUSE I once accidentally knocked my neighbour's cat into the river (when I lived on a boat). It swam so fast to the bank that it didn't even get the fur on its back wet!

@maluse Ducks are evidently more sensible than cows. Both are more sensible than a human being who puts a cow in a boat on a river and expects all to be well.

The cow had to be put on a boat because there is no bridge.

I've seen a similar video but with horses desperate to be let out of their stables. They plunge out into the snow, stop for a few seconds then turn and plunge back into their stables.

I don't think of snow when I think of Australia or was it somewhere else?

@MALUSE The video was from some other country. But it always amazes me that Australia has more snow than Switzerland! In fairness, we're a much bigger country.

@MALUSE True but not much of our area has snow.

I love ducks. The clip is hilarious. They definitely didn't care for the snow -- can't say as I blame them! I hate it too! Have a wonderful day. Good post.

That is interesting fact. But we Indians already acknowledge cows as intelligent animals. :)

The poor ducks. We don’t have many ducks around here anymore, but plenty of cows.

Those ducks are funny - but at least they go out initially! Chickens won't even set foot in the snow if they can avoid it!

Well, chickens are chickens. What can they do? :-) They've even made it into dictionaries: adjective (INFORMAL) cowardly. "I was too chicken to go to court" -- verb (INFORMAL) withdraw from or fail in something through lack of nerve. "the referee chickened out of giving a penalty"

@Fleura I've always wondered why chicken are seen like this in English. In German, chicken are not discriminated against verbally.

@MALUSE That's a generalisation but it is a bit mean. And under certain circumstances chickens can be quite fierce!

Cows and sheep and horses are all good swimmers and there are several islands around Scotland where the animals used to be swum across for the summer season.

This is interesting. I didn't know that these heavy animals can swim longer distances.

The last crofter to swim his cattle between winter grazings completes his herd's crossing of the sea to Skye.

I guess ducks don't like snow. They were quick to get back in the barn.

This is very interesting, I never know that cows can float in the water even though their bodies are so heavy.

Oh, those smart ducks. I can relate. Never thought cows were capable of swimming. Live and learn.
