A New Computer?

My current laptop is about 14 years old. The keyboard no longer works. I have an old PC keyboard plugged into the USB port. The charger does not work anymore either. I have an external charger and two batteries which I recharge constantly. There is an HP at Walmart with a 15" screen, 8GB of RAM and 256GB of hard drive capacity. It's $399. I am thinking about just breaking down and getting it. It's not like I cannot afford it. I have just been hemming and hawing. I think it has everything I need. Should I just buy it?

No, do a load of research first and compare prices from different places. Also, do you have cash back sites there? If I am making a big purchase I try and use a cashback site so I can get a little bit off the price.

@porwest it does and would be even better if you used a cashback card on a cash back site

I use a cash back card. 1-5%. Does that count?

@porwest My first comment sounded a bit abrupt. I should have put a at the end.

This one seems to be a good price for what I want and need. And it's an HP. My current one is HP, and I have had others before. The worst computer I bought was a Dell.

@arthurchappell The only thing I don't like about the HP, is it always seems to want to update. But I don't know if that's an HP thing or a Microsoft thing. My Dell at work never needs to be updated though and it uses Windows as well.

@porwest I am reluctant to buy a new computer. It does take time to adjust.

@HazySue It does, and that's the part I don't like. But all things are eventual, and eventually I will just have to suck it up and do it.

For me the worst part is just starting all over. But I know eventually I will be forced to do it anyway, and with the new one before you know it I will be used to it... Soo...

Don't buy the new one. All you need is to buy some good quality hardware for your old laptop. ( buy only laptop keyboard). Mine is 15 years old and working fine.

I am getting tired of having to externally charge the batteries. The keyboard issue I could probably live with.

Generally computers can only last up to 5 years, if it's 14 years it means it's time for you to buy a new one.

$399 for a laptop is quite a bargain. Mine was in the $1K range. I need to upgrade my iPhone. I have a 6S, which I got I think in 2016. The battery doesn't work as well anymore and I am pretty close to the 16 GB storage my phone has. Yet I can't bring myself to get a new iPhone, even though my mom wants to get it for me as a birthday present. My birthday was in December.

I'd go for more RAM and hard drive capacity; but that's just me. I replace my computer about every 7 years. Good luck. Do you like HP? I have a Dell and a Toshiba. I no longer use the Toshiba.

@porwest If you don't play video games, 8GB should be fine.

I was thinking more RAM as well, but a lot of people are telling me 8GB is pretty much it. Not sure about that. I don't mind HP, and have had several. The only computer that absolutely permanently crashed on me was my Dell, so I will probably never buy another one.

@LindaOHio Nope. No video games for me. But I do like to record music, and I do like to watch videos.

Your old laptop had served you well, been there for 14 years maybe time for replacement. Mine is only 4 years old but am already thinking of replacing it it's too slow now.

If you do have the money, I think there is nothing wrong with buying a new laptop. Because this will make your job easier and faster.

You are right. And besides. I got 14 years out of my last one so I think I got way more than my money's worth out of it. I will be breaking down very soon and getting one. Just not pulling the trigger just yet. But soon.

There's a lot more to consider including price and compatibility. It is better to just buy it. Less hassle. if it's a bargain get it :D

It's not an easy choice to make. I was toying with getting a new laptop but after dithering a lot I then decided to get my desktop updated. It was well worth it for less than the price of a new decent laptop.

That's a really old computer. With all the problem it has, maybe it's time for it to retire. I don't know the typical price there. After conversion, it's around RM1600. That's quite a lot. But thanks to the learning from home for students these days, laptop prices soar a bit. I would say go for it.

I say go for it. HP is a decent brand, and if you can't even charge your computer, time for a new one. 400 is a bargain given a laptop that I would need, would cost at best, 500 to 600 at best by. I seriously need to look at Wal-mart for a computer, and see if I can find one that's reasonably priced and has what I need.

Have you researched it? Sometimes you can get something as good as if not better online for the same price. I certainly wouldn't go into Walmart blind and just buy what they have on offer. There's no percentage in buying something today and then figuring out tomorrow that you could have done better.

Bro just buy it. I have 2 laptops and a brand new Chromebook. I ordered a new laptop after I moved here and my ex and I were separated. I forgot that the account was on his Amazon Prime credit card. Guess who paid for the laptop that I never use?
