When Relatives Borrow Money

It just hurts when a relative borrows money without any intention to pay. Two years ago, my niece, borrowed money from me. Without second thoughts, I lent her the money because she promised to return it as soon as her customer pays which was about within two weeks. A month later, she borrowed again. It has been over two years. No words about the money. Before the pandemic (2019) broke, I told her that I needed cash as I wanted to enroll in an online course. "I will pay you on my payday", she replied. Of course, I assumed she would send me the money. This morning, I sent a direct message to her inbox. She has not seen my message yet.

it is really difficult to loan money, relative or not. Most of them will not treat it as their priority to pay since they assume that you have more.

I totally agree that she really thought I have more just because my husband is a foreigner and was a seaman during that time. I do not have a regular job (then and now). She has been working as a teacher, she side hustles as online seller, and her husband has not stopped working since the pandemic. I know she can pay me if she wanted to. She was not even broke when she borrowed money from me.

I helped a friend out once, she needed money for Christmas and her kids, I let her borrow $550, to pay back when she could, even $20 a week was fine with me. That was 13 years ago. Her kids are grown now, she works at a bank, but I’ve never gotten anything back. When I see her she never mentions it. It would bug me if I got a loan from someone and never paid d it back, like do you forget that? I hope she pays you back.

It's sad that they do this. But the worm turns. The lady I use to help has written checks that bounced and the manager will not take anymore from her. I bet I look pretty good right about now. You're not the only loser. They lose too.

That sounds like my luck with people, family or not. I stopped helping people with money period because of it. That is so disrespectful. People will do anything to take from you and they will ignore you after that, The ones who done that to me are very good liars and manipulators, I found out after the fact with my own two eyes.

I know you need it but count it as loss. I use to loan money to my employer, and she would never pay me back. One way they feel as though they got over.Bur the clear thing is they only hurt themselves in the long run. Because they are going to need what they ruined only they just don't know it yet.

Maybe she's too broke to pay back. Though I agree that she needs to pay back even little by little.

I don't think so. She has a job and an online selling business. Her husband works as an engineer in a maritime company.

LOL. Will you lend her money again? Please be nice and don't charge her more than 10% interest per month.

Oh no that is really the risk you have to take when loaning money to anyone. The risk that you may not collect it anymore is really high.

Whoever it wants, sometimes they use an excuse not to pay it. Lucky, my relatively and family always return it on time. Hope you get yours!

That's no shock. You need to be careful who you lend money to. Even family. Everyone's struggling nowadays. And, we're only two months into 2021.

I never loan to anyone expecting to get it back. And if they ask a second time without repaying the first I tell them no.

This is always the problem with borrowing. Easy to borrow, hard to repay. I Never give more than I can spare.

I have been a victim of people borrowing money without paying. The first time was, of all people, one of my college barkadas who borrowed some of the money which was the proceeds of a loan I got from my employer to construct an overhead water tank, purchase of an electric motor and building of a small stock room. She was aware where the money came from but when time came that I needed the money, she was always avoiding me. Weeks turned into months and months turned into years and the amount I lent went into thin air. Another time was when a co-worker borrowed money for his electric bill. The amount became forgotten and part of memories. Another instance was one other friend who borrowed money to buy that spray for the asthma of his wife. Having not paid the amount, he still had the gall to attempt to borrow again which I no longer lent. Still another time was when another acquaintance in service borrowed money to buy medicine for his sick child. The money I had was for the snack allowance of my two daughters but weighing that he needed the amount, I lent him 60% of the money. Payment was never made. As they say: "when a man needs to borrow money, you're his best friend; but when it's time for payment, he does not know you". I had many other experiences of having lent money without being paid.

You know what? My brother's ex-girlfriend borrowed money from me a week before my wedding day. She and my brother were not in good terms but they have two love-children. Since their kids are my nieces, I loaned her money. She said she will return the money before "Thursday". I told her, " I am getting married so I need money for all the expenses of my wedding. I am lending money because you were delayed in paying the kids' insurance." Come, Thursday.. She did not pay. When I asked about the money, she told me "buti nga sayo". Then, I realized she was green with envy that I was getting married but she and my brother did not end together despite they have kids. She also did not allow my nieces to be my flower girls.
