Here is a little quiz for you. It concerns homophones which are words which sound the same but have different meanings. They are usually spelt differently but not always. Examples are beat/beet, rite/right, days/daze.
Homophones are popular in cryptic crosswords and are often suggested when the clue contains words like: say, uttered, we hear, sounds like.
For example: Clue: Encounter with steak, say (4 letters)
Answer: Meet. (Encounter = meet, steak = meat)
So here we go. You might need to think laterally. I guess I’ll just put the answers at the end so stop reading before then if you want to have a go at solving the clues.
1: Uttered correct liturgy (4 letters)
2: Fruit that's put in the ground, we hear (5 letters)
3: Youngster who pinches (6 letters)
4: Feel better and get dressed (7 letters)
5: Get to a stretch of the river (5 letters)
6: Reeked of mining operation (5 letters)
A helpful hint: Try to find a synonym for part of the clue and see if it fits the other part of the clue
Answers:
1: Rite. (correct = right, liturgy = rite)
2: Berry. (Fruit = berry, put in the ground = bury)
3: Nipper (a nipper is slang for a small child and something that pinches is a ‘nipper’
4: Recover (in a cryptic crossword, recover would be an acceptable answer to ‘get dressed’)
5: Reach
6: Smelt
Photo is of a misshapen tree-trunk which is sort of like twisted words. Or maybe not.

This one really got me thinking and I was reminded of a task we were set at school. We had to make a list of words which sounded the same but were spelled differently and had different meanings. eg; Wear and Where, To and Two.

There are dozens of them when you start looking for them. I used to love those sorts of tasks. Anything to do with words I enjoyed.
